  • Do visa officers ask for insurance at interview?

There is a lot of useful information about visitor's medical insurance in this site. However, is it normal for B-1/B-2 applicants to be asked about their medical insurance? Most people would get this insurance coverage only after getting their visitor visa. Obviously, no sane person would visit the US without getting coverage :-)
Is there likely to be questioning about insurance at the entry point?

Travel insurance is not mandatory by law so neither the visa officer nor the
entry officer will ever ask about it.

Is not mandatory by law, but some people in this forum have reported the VOs asking for it... is not mandatory, but due to high medical cost in the USA it is always a good idea.

So we should come prepared with info

My original query was based on some people on this forum mentioning that the VO asked about insurance. So it seems a prudent step to come prepared with details of the insurance we plan to take-all details seem to be available elsewhere on this site.

Another related point-let us say that you are a healthy male in early 50s who plans to visit the US for maximum one month. What amount of insurance do you think is appropriate?

For citizens of India, medical insurance is rarely asked at the time of visa interview. It is asked only in case the person is very hold (say 80+), has many known medical problems or some similar cases.

Therefore, I strongly suggest that you buy the medical insurance right after getting the visa, but definitely before arriving in the USA.

You can look at different visitor medical insurance plans at https://www.insubuy.com/ and purchase the one you like. You can also call us at (866) INSU-BUY if you have any questions.
