  • Spouse Name different in passport and Visa Application

I am planning to bring my parents to US to visit me. I scheduled an appointment on Jan 2,2008. But after submitting the visa application form (submitted through travel agency), they found out that my mom's spouse name is different in passport and visa application form. To make the problems worse, my mom's spouse name is wrong in passport (given as Ambika Poruran rather than Poruran which is my dad's name).. In the visa application form, the spouse name is written as Poruran which is correct

What am I supposed to do in this situation?..

    1. Will it create any problem in getting the visa?

    2. Shall I go ahead and correct the spouse name in the ds-156 form as in passport even though it is correct? I read that for ds-156 correction, only the first 14 columns are ineditable. Since the spouse name is the 18th column, will I be able to correct it?

    3. Can I reschedule the appointment and get the new passport?

    You can correct ...

.. all the confusing mistakes in the form and notify the VO.

Personally, if this is the first time your parents are applying for a visa, then it will be in your best interests to correct the passport, else the incorrect name in the passport will stick with you forever.

You'll have more issues in future if you correct the names later on as the US documents and your then corrected information will mis-match.

However, I know a lot of people having such "mistakes" and they just use the "new" names for life!

Pick your choice, depending on your situation.

    Good luck.

I did not understand what the problem here is.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.
