  • Name of girlfriend in bank statement ?

    Hello,

I am an Indian Citizen and am going for the US visit visa interview next week. To give my background, I'm a 28 year old software engineer. I did my Bachelors and Masters degree in US and worked in US for 3 years. So basically I went to US on an F1-visa in 2001 - and then worked on H1B from 2005 to 2008. I have both F1 and H1B visas stamped in my passport. In 2008 march, I resigned and came back to India to work on a startup idea along with my friends. We have launched our business about 1 month back.

Now I am planning to visit US for a week and hence am applying for the visit visa. Now as per the required documents, sometimes they ask for almost 3 years of bank statements. Most of my money is still in US and I'll be producing that bank statement. So some of the questions I had were regarding this:

    1) On my bank account, I am the primary account holder, but its a joint account in which I've added my girl friend. Now in any bank statements I take, its going to show her name as well. How much of an issue is that. There's no way I can take her name off. So if asked by the interviewer, I can either say - she's a friend or girl friend or fiance. I dont know which option is the best and how that will influence the decision. My girl friend is a US citizen and I can produce her passport copy as evidence. So I wanted to know what is the best way to handle this situation?

    2) Although I'm in India for a year, is it okay to produce a bank statement from US?
    3) I'm self sponsoring myself - I've heard people say if you have someone sponsor you -you have a better chance of getting the visa. Is that true?
    4) I'm going to show a $10,000 bank statement for a weeks trip - is that sufficient?

    Thankyou for your responses.

You can show US bank statements and self-sponsorship is better than somebody else in the US sponsoring you. But, if somebody from India is sponsoring you (possibly your company) that will establish ties to India. Also, if you are honest about everything you should be fine.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.
