  • Worker bringing mother his mother over

    Hi,

I am planning on finding a job in US (specifically Florida). I am a European citizen (Latvia), I currently live and work in UK.

My question is as follows - if I managed to move to US then how difficult would it be for me to bring my mother (who is currently 65) over as well? She currently lives in Latvia (alone), my father died several years ago, which leaves me as the only family supporter.

Would it be possible for her to get visitors visa for a long time so that she could stay in US without leaving? I've spoken to a couple of people in US and they said that (they think) there is a visa for elderly people and I think I've heard something that there is some visa for family reunion.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Let me know if there's anything else that you should know.

    Thanks in advance!

    There is no such visa.

Your mother is not considered your dependent and she can't accompany you to live with you.

She can visit you for a short term on tourist visa and has to go back.

If she wants to stay with you permanently, you first come here, get greencard, become US citizen, sponsor her greencard, she gets green card and then she can stay with you. You are looking at anywhere from 5 to 15 years process.

Thanks a lot for your help!

On the same note - is it difficult to get worker's visa if I am a skilled professional (currently working as the senior php (web) developer in London)?

        I don't think so..

Well.. The primary qualification for a visitors VISA is that you must not have an intention of remaining in the US. You must show strong ties to your country(such as Property-both movable and unmovable, bank accounts and the like). If the Visa Officer suspects that your intention is to immigrate to the US,then your Visa will be surely rejected. So I guess there an opportunity for your mother to apply for a H4 Visa(dependent VISA). H4 Visa is normally for spouses but since your mother is dependent on you can file one for her.

Please do not consider this as a professional advise. You need to speak to Immigration attorneys or at least to the senior members in this forum to know more about it.
Anyway, hope you get the H1B and your mom gets the H4(if law permits).Good luck.

Parents do not qualify for a H4.
