  • How can I get my name "corrected" in the Indian passport in INDIA

How can I get my name corrected in the passport ? I wanted to get the corrected in my passport. At this time, First Name and Last Name is on same field. And Surname field is EMPTY.

In my current passport, two fields:
    Given Name: First_Name Last_Name
    Surname: ______

So this means there is no Surname and i want to get it corrected to:
    Given Name: First_Name
    Surname: Last_Name

I am not able to find the exact steps to get the Indian Passport corrected in INDIA. (I am currently in INDIA). Just want to mention that all my other documents have my First Name as well as Last Name as "First_Name" and "Last_Name " respectively.

That's a great question. Unfortunately, I don't have the process to do it in India, but I can tell you the process to do it in the US (NYC).

My wife's indian passport had the same exact problem and she said that during the passport application she explicitly told the passport staff to make sure her name was correctly placed in the two different fields... as we had seen other passport holders with the entire name placed in the "given name". My wife said that the passport office refused to do that and said that they will only issue passports with the entire name written in the "given name" section. They also said that if we wanted to change it, we can take it up with the Indian Embassy in the US. So, her passport and US visa were issued with it.

When she got to New York, I applied for her name to be split and fixed by the Indian Embassy in New York. Apparently, it's such a common problem that it's one of the top issues that the Indian Embassy has written on their website. So, it's unimaginable why the Indian passport services keeps making these mistakes intentionally.

In New York, our application procedure was to send an application, passport photos, old passport and a few supporting documents, and mail it to the Indian Consulate. They made the correction, and split her name into the right categories. In fact, since after marriage, my wife took my last name, they also issued the new passport with her married last name. So, the Indian Consulate was very easy to work with and had the procedures clearly spelled out.

I know this wasn't exactly the question you asked, but it may help you sort of figure out the procedures and the fact that we all have to deal with this problem.

Good luck. I learned the hard way, I hope you don't have to. Immigration is interesting. Not considered as legal advice.

It is pretty simple. I did that just yesterday. You need to apply for a reissue of the passport and give the reason as change in particulars. Choose others in the list and enter Name Bifurcation in the text box which appears when you choose others. Passport Seva Kendra knows this process and they get it done easily.

I finished the entire process in the PSK in 15 minutes.

Thanks, it's very surprising that they keep doing this. My wife even filled out her application with the names in the right categories, they still ignored it and did it wrong anyway. In any case, it seems like the process is similar in India as it is in the US with the Indian consulate.
