  • B1 B2 renewal for parents - 221G Interview please help

My parents applied for B1 B2 renewal since the 10 year period expired. After the drop box submission, the visa status showed "Refused" and they got the 221g form with two checkboxes selected:

    1. Appear for interview with the 221g form

    2. Your application is refused for administrative processing. The application will be reconsidered when administrative processing is complete.

    My questions:

    1. Why are the 2 checkboxes selected? Does it mean after interview, they still want to do admin processing and have USCIS verify the application?

    2. They have visited USA every year for past 4 years and stayed the entire 6 months. Two years ago, they applied for extension and stayed 4 months after authorization. Will this be questioned during the interview? What reason can they provide that would be convincing?

    3. What other questions they need to expect during the interview?

Your help would be appreciated ! Thank you.

Guess they have already started admin processing (basically background check). Possibly their extension during last visit causing the call to interview.

Possibly they may be questioned for that. If asked, tell the truth for their reason to stay longer. And also provide proof that they are not misusing their B2 visa by partially living (6 months) in USA.

They might be asked, if they are planning to do the same in future (like staying in USA for 6 months & then 6 months outside USA).
