  • Can I transfer the place of visa application, due to non-availability of dates

    Hi,

I need to be in the states by the 6th of December. However, I see from the VFS website that there are no dates currently available in Mumbai, during November and nothing shows for December either...

I am going on a tourist visa, to travel with my family (who have their visas)...Also, I have been invited by a university to participate in a discussion/ jury while I am there.

Please advise me on two things:

a.) Can I just apply to another city (say Delhi) since there are no dates available in Mumbai ? (I dont think I can make a case for an emergency visa to be given...

b.) Since I am visiting the US for travelling with family, and also attending a jury/ seminar at a university that has invited me, do you think I still need to apply as a Tourist? (I will not be receiving a salary or be getting paid by the university)

    Thanks so much

    B-1

You will get a combination B-1/B-2 and the purpose of your visit as a tourist w/family and for business are both covered by those 2 categories of that combined visa.

As for where to apply, you'll have to ask the consulate (I think they have an e-mail address for inquiries on their website.)

Thanks BigJoe! If the university is inviting me to attend a review (its only for a day), would you think I need any other documents from them apart from a letter of invitation... Do they need to send any documents directly to the consulate? Also, they mention that they will be reimbursing only part of the travel amount... and so, I will be showing sufficient funds of my own to be used for the visit...
