Visitor visa for in-laws - sponsored or self-sponsored?

My father in law is a businessman. I am planning to invite them to visit us here in US. When we apply for their visitor visa, should we apply it as a self sponsored by my father-in-law or sponsored by me. I have heard different opinions and am not able to decide what is a better option to make sure they get their visa.

If he can show that he is capable of taking care of his own expenses, it would be better that he does that. If he can't, you can show that you will.
