We (some friends in the US) would like to invite speakers from India to give lectures in the US for which we plan on compensating the speakers. This will be an event where the participants will be paying a fee to attend the seminar. The fee will be paid directly to the speakers coming from India, not to the organizers. 1) What are the ways an alien (in this case Indian citizen, residing in India) can come into the US to give a lecture and get paid, directly by the attendees? 2) When they apply for a visa in India, what is the type of visa they should seek? The purpose is for the speakers to come in, give the lecture and return home to India. It is not an organization that is inviting them but a group of friends that have a common interest but do not have a formal organization or a company. This is basically a private event where a bunch of friends gather and listen to highly accomplished speakers (on a paid basis).
There is a program where Universities can invite foreign speakers and pay them. The attendees cannot pay the speakers but the academic institution can (after withholding federal taxes to the tune of 30%). No where we could find information on how an individual can invite a foreign speaker and have that person give a guest lecture, get paid directly by the attendees and return home.
Looking for concrete ideas on this, esp. from those that have done something like this before.
Thank You.
