  • Port of entry question for Mother in Law

    Hello,
My mother in law will be landing at port of entry in Seattle along with my wife and 10 month old son all in the same flight.
We all will be moving out of state for my wife's job and mother in law will be here to help with the transition. She plans to stay with us for three months.
I wonder if would be okay to tell this to the immigration officer or would it be looked at as domestic help?
Is it advisable to have my wife and mother in law go separately for the port of entry interview??
    Any suggestions would help.
    Thanks

    They should go separately.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

Thanks Kabkaba. Just wondering what can be a good answer if both wife and mother in law are seen by the same officer within a span of few minutes and he asks the mother in law if she is traveling alone??

You have not mentioned the visa status of your wife and son. I assume your MIL has a visitor visa.

Wife has Green Card, Son is US citizen and mother in law has visitor visa.
Mother in law visited US for six months during last year. Thank you!

            It is not a problem.
PRs and USCs usually have separate immigration counters.
Even if there is a common counter , your MIL does not need to give details about being a help etc. All they will ask is purpose and duration. She can say, she is here to visit her daughter's family for 3 months. That is it.

So basically they should go separate -correct? btw Seattle airport has same lines for LPR and non- USC...only USC have a separate line..( I just entered via Seattle two weeks ago)

              Thanks again!

Helping you move is not an acceptable purpose of trip for Visitors. They can only come to US to meet you and for sightseeing etc.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.

Thanks peace999- Just to make sure I understand it correctly.. so wife and MIL should try their best to go separately correct?? Off course Mother is law is going to say that she is here for visiting her family and for tourism.
                  Thanks!
