  • Visitor visa extension instances

    Hello folks,

I have a generic question for visitor visa extension.

My mother has a 10 year visa and has visited three times earlier.

This time I intend to apply for extension.

    Question
Provided she stays here for say 12 months, then during her next visit can I apply for extension again.
Is there any limit on the instances?

I understand that I cannot extend multiple times during the same visit, but for separate instances, is it ok to apply?

    Kindly advise.

    Regards.

    Beware of the pitfalls of such extended stays ( 12 months in one go);

    1. they won't renew her visa at US embassy/consulate when it expires .
2.If she comes back again in a few months after spending 12 months, she will be questioned at entry for spending so much time in US.

If she does not plan to renew her visa in future, she can go ahead. Yes, she can apply again for an extension on her next visit but success is never guaranteed
    for pleasure extensions.

      Thanks peace999 for the reply.

I did read in this forum from one member, saying the visa renewal (for 10 years) was done even after the members parents did file for extension. i.e the parents stayed for the extension duration, went to India and did apply for a new visa and got it.

Can someone share their experience in having a multiple instance of extension?

It is a tourist visa not a resident visa, and it would seem to me and possibly the USCIS/State Dept. that you are using the improperly. Yes it is possible to do multiple extensions but when there is so much time spent in the US then it leads to questions. And also the Visa does not guarantee entry into the US. At the POE the officer could deny entry even if they have a visa for the same reason I stated above.

The way you are planning, your mother will be using a visitor visa as a resident visa.
One extension once in a while does not matter, but 6 month stay everytime and then multiple extensions will surely
lead to questions at renewal. And at port of entry .
