Visitor visa extension

Hi,

My mom is currently in US(visitor visa) with I-94 valid for 6 months. How much time before the 6 month expiration can I apply for visa extension. Normally how much extension can we apply?
What documents are required? Please help, I have no idea about visitor visa.

They say you should wait for at least three months before your I-94 expires to apply because otherwise they may think you planned to file for an extension but currently they are working on the extension from July 23, 2007 at least in the Vermont center so that is for people who sent out their applications six months ago. We applied for a visa extension for my aunt in August (her I-94 expired Nov 4, 2007) and we are still waiting for an answer. it looks like it will be another month. She has a ticket back for March 15 so I hope she gets the answer before she leaves.
You can apply for no longer than six months.

013008 Update: Just got an email (I signed up for email update online) and it said the approval letter was sent. The whole process took about 5 and a half months... Sent in application the 10th of August, they got it the 16th got approval on the 30th of Januray.

I sent in the i-539 application, a copy of the I-94 form. Copies of all (YES ALL) pages of the passport, and the financial sponsering papers (ie letter from employer for both me and my husband, copies of recent tax return, bank account statements, mortage statement, etc the full enchilada). Gave reason to spend Christmas with family, spend more time with family and travel the US. Gave specific plans of where we would travel (Fall White Mountain trip), sping Niagra Fall trip, and see New York in winter... Did not send ticket. I sent the original eticket which said she returns in Oct but said it would be easy to change to whatever date we needed it for additional fee. I guess that was enough.
