Court letter for Unpaid medical bill - Urgent advice needed

I had sponsored my mother to visit USA in 2010. During that time she had an emergency and got hospitalized for 2 days. And the medical bill came out to $13 K. Though i had taken the travelers insurance for her, the insurance denied her coverage for delayed response from our side(The insurance company sent me an letter and asked my mom to sign on that. But during that time myself and my mom already went back to india. When i returned to USA after 2 months, i found this letter and there were logistical delay in getting the sign from my mom and sending it back to insurance company).
However i have not singed any documents and all the bills were in my mom's name.

Then the bills went to collection agent and finally i received a court letter on my mom's name.

My question is:
1) Will i be responsible for the unpaid medical bills? Has anyone had this situation before?
2) Is there any legal way to request insurance company to pay the bills (i already talked to the insurance company and they denied)

I appreciate any advice/experience on this.

There is no legal way for you to request the insurance company to reconsider the bills if you are outside the time limits.

I suggest that you immediately consult an attorney who specializes in debt collection matters.
