  • Visitor Medical Insurance - Old Parents / Pre-Existing Conditions / USA & Canada

    Hi

My parents (aged 72 and 79) will be visiting for 4 months. They checked insurance in India, and NO pre-existing condition coverage is available.

My mother (72) is in relatively good health overall (mild knee issues & arthritis).

My father (79) has been a cardiac patient and had a bypass 2 years ago. He also has early stage Parkinsons (though that doesn't result in any other issues).

From reading these forums, it seems that the only pre-existing condition coverage available is for under-70s -- is there any policy that provides even some coverage for emergency issues such as heart attacks or similar?

My siblings and I all have strong medical coverage through our large employers, but I am assuming there is no way to add parents to those policies (as they are visitors, not permanent residents)?

Any suggestions / ideas / solutions?

My parents said they will get travel insurance covering other items (and new medical conditions) from one of the two Indian companies providing such policies, and it seems cheaper than buying that in the US, but I am mostly concerned about what happens if there is an emergency related to my father's heart condition.

    Thank you in advance!

My parents will also be spending 2 weeks in Canada (Quebec) -- I understand it is possible to buy visitor coverage for the Canadian system?

Unfortunately, at that age, it is very difficult to get good insurance plan even for new medical conditions. You may be worried about the existing problems but you never know what kind of new medical conditions they will get into it. Short term visitors insurance plans are just for that purpose.

Please look at https://www.insubuy.com/patriot-america-insurance/ or https://www.insubuy.com/patriot-plat...ica-insurance/ In addition to covering new medical conditions, injuries or accidents that may occur after the effective date of the policy, it will also cover up to $2,500 in sudden an unexpected recurrence of pre-existing conditions as described at https://www.insubuy.com/patriot-trav...ions-coverage/

Both Patriot America and Patriot Platinum America will cover anywhere outside the home country including US and Canada.

Before you consider purchasing the visitors insurance from India based company, please make sure to read https://www.insubuy.com/visitors-ins...ia-comparison/ first. Please read it thoroughly. Most plans from India are only fixed coverage plans for people above the age of 55 years (some above 50 years) and not comprehensive coverage plans. Fixed coverage plans have severe sub-limits that are significantly lower than the anticipated expenses in US/Canada. Make sure to read https://www.insubuy.com/visitors-insurance/ to understand the difference between fixed and comprehensive coverage plans. Do not look only at the cost. Please make sure to do apples to apples comparison.

Of course, you can't add your parents to your own employer provided health insurance. If that were possible, we would not be in business. That is because parents are not considered dependents in this country (only spouse and children under 26 years are considered dependents for insurance purposes.)

I hope this answers all of your questions.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to post them here or contact us at any time.
