Settling Medical Bills with a Insurance Provider

Hi

My dad was admitted to hospital when he was visiting us
He had pneumonia and his situation was a bit bad.
His stay was extended as the docs suspected it to be TB (as he came from India) which was not the case
It extended the stay for him
All his VISA, Tickets, Insurance were paid by me

the bill came out to $101K. Here is the breakup
- Allowed amount was $81K (the insurer had a Multichannel discount of 20%)
- I had a 75% coverage plan - so Insurance paid $60K
- I owe them $20.5 K

Due to the undertaking on 134 document I think I am on hook to pay the money.
I want to check how much discount the hospital can provide. Have people negotiated these settlements with the hospitals

I am glad that the insurance company paid your claims as per the terms and conditions of the plan you purchased. I wish more and more people reported the paid claims to increase the confidence of prospective buyers.

It seems that the hospital has already given you the discount of $20,000.

For the remaining balance that is your responsibility, I recommend that you talk with the hospital to see if you can get any further discount. It is possible but it really depends upon the individual hospital and the person handling your case. Therefore, it would be highly inaccurate to give any specific advise.

Hospital may also provide you a payment plan where you can pay in installments. Alternatively, hospital can put you in touch with one of the several companies that provide you a credit (or loan) to pay the hospital bill and then you can pay them in installments, just like you would do when you take the mortgage for house.
