  • ExPatriot Plus plan in New York

The brochure for the ExPatriot Plus plan seems to indicate that the plan is not available to non-US citizens residing in New York, California, or Florida. Does this mean that if one's parents come to visit and stay with their son in New York, then they are not eligible? Thanks.

    single trip vs multiple trips?

Another question about US insurance policies: Are they valid for a single trip, or are they valid for multiple trips to the USA.

Re: single trip vs multiple trips?

      1. CA, NY, FL:

It is not quite true the way you interpreted.

Just because you happen to live in NY and your parents come to visit you, by no means, they are NY residents. They don't file taxes over there, don't have driver's license from NY.

They would be NY residents if they would be permanently staying there and have no address outside US.

Visitors visiting USA (including visiting CA, NY, FL) can certainly purchase ExPatriot Plus and other IMG plans.

I hope it is clear. If not, please let me know.

      2.
They are primarily single trip. Howerver, for ExPatriot Plus, you can get incidental home country coverage. Following is taken from ExPatriot Plus brochure.

Incidental Home Country Coverage- During the Period of Coverage an insured person may return to their country of residence for incidental visits up to a cumulative two weeks total, subject to: a. The insured person must have left their country of residence, b. The Total Period of Coverage must be for a minimum of 30 days, and c. The return to the country of residence may not be taken to receive treatment for an illness or injury incurred while traveling.
End of Trip Home Country Coverage-For every six (6) months of coverage you purchase, you can purchase one (1) additional month of home country coverage as an accommodation and supplemental travel benefit, up to a maximum of 2 months. To purchase this special home country extension coverage, please check the appropriate box on the Application Form, and calculate your premium to include the additional month(s).

        Comprehensive vs fixed coverage

Thanks for the reply. One more question, which many others would have is: Given that pre-existing conditions are not anyway covered, why does one prefer a comprehensive insurance rather than a fixed coverage plan?

Also what exactly does emergency evacuation cover. If there is an emergency due to a pre-existing condition, does that mean emergency evacaution would cover transportation to home country?

          Re: Comprehensive vs fixed coverage

The reason how much you would get covered once you get new disease or injury that did not exist before purchasing the insurance.

For example, if you visit an emergency room, fixed coverage will pay $300 per visit($500 in case of 100K coverage). Even if the expese is $2,000, it will only pay $300. You have to pay rest.

If you need surgery, fixed coverage will pay $3,000 ($5,000 in case of 100K coverage). Even if surgery costs you $40,000, it will pay $3,000. You have to pay rest.

On the other hand, if you purchased comprehensive insurance, after you have paid your deductible, it will pay 80% for first $5,000 expense, and after that, it will pay 100%, up to policy maximum. That means, in addition to deductible, your out of pocket maximum is $1,000.

          I hope it is clear.

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Emergency evacuation is entirely different from what you understood. Imagine you are going on a highway, and meet an accident. There is no proper facility available nearby where you get adequate care. In this case, you would need an ambulance or helicopter that can take you to nearest hospital where adequate care can be given. In case you are within US, of course, adequate care can be given within US itself.

But suppose, you have to gone to Bahamas(neighboring island country off the cost of Florida), and get some emergency medical situation that can't be properly treated there. In that case, helicopter or air ambulance(small airplane) can take you to Florida, US where adequate care can be given. In this case, suppose the person's home country is US, they have taken him back to home country.

I completely understand what you are thinking. Many persons from India that have pre-existing conditions, if they get into some medical trouble that insurance will not cover, they would like to go back to India where they can get much cheaper treatment. In that case, insurance company will NOT pay to go back to India.
