  • Medical Insurance for my mom

My Mom is 62 years old and is planning to visit me by the end of September. She is Diabetic, and takes insulin injection everyday. In India she visits the doctors office very frequently, to get her BP/Sugar level checked etc., If she has to visit the doctors office once a month in teh US for general checkup(more of an assurance that she is doing ok kinda stuff) what kind of insurance would you recommend, and how much would it cost?

I read thru one of Narendra's links and I am kinda convinced to get the insurance from USA than getting a travellers insurance from India. Any thoughts on this would also help.

Thank you all for this helpful link.

As you are aware, we have many visitors insurance plans available at https://www.insubuy.com/ You can buy any of them.

However, no plan from any company will cover her daily insulin, blood pressure pills, frequent check ups to the doctor etc. You will have to bear all those expenses yourself. It would be a pure loss for any company to cover them.

Insurance is for future protection for unforeseen sicknesses, injuries or accidents, and not for known expenses.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to post them here or contact us at any time.

      Thanks Narendra

I understand it will not cover daily pills etc., I am planning on asking her to bring 9 months worth of supply for her.
But I thought regular doctor visit with a copay would be covered.

If she falls ill, and if that is because of her Diabetes, will that be covered under pre existing condition?

        1. No, that would not be covered.

        2. No, that would not be covered as it would be considered pre-existing condition.

However, please look at Atlas America plan at https://www.insubuy.com/atlasamerica-insurance/

It covers up to $15,000 in acute onset of pre-existing conditions up to $15,000 for pesons below age 70 years. More details about acute onset of pre-existing conditions is available at https://www.insubuy.com/atlas-americ...ions-coverage/

In simple terms: Acute onset of pre-existing condition means some emergency occuring all of sudden without any warning or symptoms and you take treatment within next 24 hours. It is a narrow definition for coverage. However, some people think that some coverage is better than no coverage and buy it.

          Hi,

The link you posted seems like a discount plan and not the insurance.

            More Info

Regarding the preexisting condition, my mom has Diabetes and you said that will not be covered in any of the insurances. But what will be covered by the insurance, can't any of her illness be related to her pre-existing condition and be denied coverage? I am not sure how this works, can you please explain?

Other than the acute onset of pre-existing conditions up to $15,000 in Atlas America for persons below the age 70, insurance company will cover any new medical conditions, injuries or accidents that may occur after the effective date of the policy. It will not cover any pre-existing conditions or preventive check ups.

Based on the medical records and the attending physician statement, it would be determined by the claims department whether something is a covered expense or not.

I hope that answers your questions.

                Between Atlas & PAtriot

                Narendra,

I am a little confused about which one to pick. My mom has a diabetes-pre existing. I thought Atlas might be a good choice. How about their in-network coverage, who has teh best Atlas or Patriot?

                  Both have excellent PPO network.

As she has diabetes, there are some chances that something that happens would be an acute onset of pre-existing conditions and covered up to $15,000 for people below 70 years of age while that would not be covered in Patriot at all.

Therefore, Atlas America is recommnded, especially for you.
                  Thanks & Regards
