Indian Passport Photograph Requirements

Instructions:
As your photograph is scanned and printed on the passport, it should be of a high quality for
reproduction and conform to International Civil Aviation Organization specifications:

Photograph size must be passport-sized color photograph of 2" x 2" dimension.
- It must have white or off-white background.
- Photographs must be taken recently. It should not be more than six months old in any case.
- The photo must be a full face view and the applicant must face the camera directly.
- No side or angled view photographs.
- You must not look down or to either side.
- Face should cover about 50% of the photo area.
- Your head, including both face and hair, should be shown from the crown of the head to the tip of
the chin on top and bottom and from hairline side-to-side. Exposed ears are preferred.
- Head coverings and hats are only acceptable due to religious beliefs, and even then, may not
cover any portion of your face.
- A photo of minor must be on its own and not with someone else. If the child needs to be supported,
the means of support must not be in the camera's frame.
- Following types of photographs are not accepted:
- Black and white photographs
- Photographs with colored or dark glasses
- With dark or patterned background or in uniform
- Polaroid, home-shot or home-scanned, or computer printouts or unduly large/small photographs
- Photos of military, airline or other personnel wearing hats.
- Photos of an applicant wearing tribal, national costume, or other headgear that is not religious
in nature.
- Group photos.
- Digitally altered or retouched photos.
- A photo of an applicant wearing a traditional facemask or veil that does not permit
adequate identification.
- Sunglasses or other wear that detracts from the face are not acceptable unless required
for medical reasons, such as eye patch.
- Black and white photographs
