Interview:
Got to USCIS field office at 6:40am. Waited outside until 7am to go in and to go through security. Interview was scheduled at 7:30am. We were called in around 8am and finished at around 8:35am. Got a notification at 9am saying new card is being produced.
The officer called my name, and we walked in with her to her office. She asked us to sit in specific chairs and then asked for our interview notice and the ticket number we received at check in. She then asked for our passports and drivers license (current and all old passports for the beneficiary). She then asked us to stand up and take an oath to tell nothing but the truth. Then we started going over the forms we have submitted. We started with I-485, she went over all the informations on the form, asking us what our full names are, what our spouse’s parents’ names are, spouse’s date of birth, asked us where we live and our phone numbers. She asked to confirm where we got married. She asked about how we are with each others’ parents. The IO saw an old lady waiting with us outside at the waiting area earlier, and asked if that was my spouse’s mother. I said yes. She then asked my spouse how his relationships with my parents are and how they keep in contact. Then she went through the 100 questions about the criminal activities and past immigration history. After this was done, she asked us both to confirm that the signatures on the forms belong to us.
After this, she asked if we have new documents we would like to submit to her. We handed her our medical form and a bunch of updated bona fide documents, including joint health insurance, joint tax filing, renewed lease...etc to which she said it’s good to have the new joint tax filing. (note that we had already included a lot of evidence in our original submission, those were just updated lease, updated health insurance, and our new joint tax filing)
Then afterwards she was working on her computer for awhile, then she gave us a white piece of paper saying that the case is being held for review. She says we will let you know if we need more documents from you, but at this point I have everything I need from you. She asked if we have any questions. We looked at each other, thinking about whether we should ask something more specific, then before we say something she said she will recommend for approval, and she will try to do it today. At this point we thanked her profusely. Then we shook hands with her and she walked us out. We finished at around 8:35am. At 9am, we got a notification saying new card is being produced. Thank goodness!
Few final tips:
Prepare as much as you can in the original submission.
For our bona fide documents, we provided each others' narratives, timeline and key events from when we met to current day, photo collage printed from word document, rental lease, flight tickets, car insurance, engagement ring receipts, shared bank account and credit cards.
(Detailed 3 page timeline of our lives and a detailed photo collage sorted by year and month, with notes on the side describing the pictures. Instead of submitting actual glossed photos, I pasted 100+ photos onto word document organized by dates. I shrunk the size of each photo so that it's big enough to see who's in it and where it was, but small enough so I can fit 100+ photos in just a few pages of paper.)
Another helpful point is, I have never overstayed my visa, enter the US illegally, or work without authorization. So I compiled proofs for all of this to prove that i am a law-abiding person. So for this part I photocopied every page of my current and past passports, my F1 visa, my I20, I94s, proof that I stopped working once my work authorization as a student on campus expired...etc. and included all this in the original submission.
I think having a detailed and organized cover letter with a wealth of documents as evidence will really help the case.
Hope this helps and wish everyone on this forum good luck with the process! Feel free to ask me any questions.
