Fixed coverage is not enough - A true case example
We recently learned about the case who had purchased $50,000 fixed coverage plan with $100 deductible.
His 53 years old father was taken to an emergency room in Bay Area (Northern California) for the chief complaint of shortness of breath. Patient indicated that symptoms are of sudden onset, comes and goes, no change in severity.
No cough, no chest pain, no headache, no neck pain, no abdominal pain, no fever or chills, no nauseas, vomiting, no leg pain, no air travel, no other complaints.
Person had a throat infection in past but no other medical history, no family illness, no known allergies.
There were several lab tests, chest x-ray etc. types of tests done, IV was given. The patient was in the emergency room for two and half hours. No major treatment was done. And the person went home after that.
The bill is over $9,400 (Nine thousand four hundred) just for that one ER visit. Insurance company will pay maximum $330 - $100 deductible = $230. The person is left to pay around $9,200 himself.
This is how limited fixed coverage plans are. And this is true for any fixed coverage product from any company, whether it be in US or India.
Therefore, I recommend everyone to always buy comprehensive insurance plans. Some people may find it expensive, but better buy something that will really cover you adequately when you need it.
