I am a U.S. Citizen and I'm sponsoring my mother for a Green Card. I submitted a DS-230 application to the National Visa Center last month. They replied to me yesterday saying that they need:
1) An original birth certificate for my mother.
2) An original death certificate for my father (to prove that my mother's marriage was terminated). I had sent them a death certificate photocopy with an original stamp of the hospital where my father died. I believe we got the death certificate from the hospital, if I'm not mistaken. I guess this wasn't good enough.
3) My original birth certificate.
My questions:
1) The original birth and death certificates will have to be sent to me in America from Africa where my mother is. What if they get lost in the mail? I know it would be really hard to get them replaced. Do most people send originals to the NVC? What if I got certified photocopies from the Registrar in my country (the government department that issues the certificates)?
2) I am told that my mother will get back the original birth and death certificates at the interview with the American Embassy. Is this really true?
3) My birth certificate has a mistake. My birthdate is off by 8 days. So, for eaxmple, instead of saying that I was born on March 2, 1961 it says I was born on March 10, 1961. Will this cause a problem? If so, what can I do? Getting a new birth certificate will be really difficult, especially because I'm in America. However, the birthdate on my passports is correct.
I will greatly appreciate any advice I can get.
