  • OCI in Lieu of PIO‏: mandatory or optional?

Reading through the FAQ of getting OCI in lieu of PIO‏, it isn't clear whether it is mandatory to do so or optional. I am considering this for my two children who have an American passport and a PIO card at this moment. Will this prevent them for traveling? Will their PIO card in essence become invalid at a certain date if I weren't to do this now?

As of now it is valid up to 06/30/2016.

    As per the below post,
This is not a legal advice. Use at your own risk.

To make sure what you are stating, you are suggesting that in the case of kids, it might be worthwhile doing it as opposed to doing it for spouse PIO/OCI conversion?

Okay i make clear to everybody, foreign spouse apply OCI base on Indian origin spouse, will not get OCI approval until maybe couple of years later or forever. if you are indian origin or blood related to Indian origin, yes and recommend to apply in lieu of PIO because is cheap and more valuable then PIO, "why not" reason.
