J1 exchange student going to Canada to apply for U.S student visa
Hello everyone.
I am on J1 in USA, it expired in the beginning of December. I want to go to Canada as a tourist and apply there for a student visa in a US consulate (Vancouver).

Have you had any experience like that? The biggest thing is that I've been in US for 2 years and my connection with home country is poor (no job, no kids, only family and apartment). When I apply for a tourist visa to come to Canada what's the best way to prove that I'm going to leave Canada and only coming there for a tourism + visa interview?

THANK you all so so much!

H1b Visa Stamping in Vancouver
Thanks for the prior members who shared their experience. My visa interview date is on Nov 5th (Monday) at 12.15 PM at Vancouver.
I booked a room through airbnb in downtown and arrived a day early to have a look and feel. Embassy is at walking distance.
I reached the embassy by 11.45, at security they asked my passport, I797, DS 160 and photo. They verified them and asked me leave my
phone there. Next there is a security check, then document verification and finger prints on the first floor. On 20th floor actual interview
process commence. I waited around 5 minutes for my turn.
There are two VO's at the time I arrived, one is a male and the other one is a female. Female VO is fast and approving visa's but the male
VO is verifying some documentation for one of the candidate and they have been waiting. In the mean time female VO issued visa for a five
member family, and three other visa applicants. Luckily my turn came and went towards female VO.
VO: what is role
Ans: xxx
VO: What are your job responsibilities
Ans: Responsible for gathering requirements from business analysts and technical team. Based on them I design and develop enterprise
application on xxx
VO: who do you work for
Ans: xxx
VO: Do you work for your employer or client
Ans: I work for a client
VO: Who is your client
Ans: xxx
VO: What is your salary?
Ans: xxx
VO: What is your Highest level of education:
Ans: MS in CS
VO: How long it took for you to complete your Masters
Ans: xxx
VO: When did you start working?
Ans: I said my H1 was approved on xxxx, so I started working from xxxx. which is a year less than my Masters completion
VO: Havent you used your OPT?
Ans: I did my first masters in xxx, later I worked on OPT for one year and on J1 for one and half year. After that I started my Masters in CS.
VO: Ok, Your visa is approved come and pick at this location on Friday
Ans: Thank you Mam.
She didn't asked me any paper work. I gave her only my passport and I-797. It just happened in 3-4 minutes. The whole process completed
in less than an hour. When I am exiting out the other male VO said, next person in line please.
She kept my I797 with her, I came back and later realized that. I went back to embassy and they said we will return that back with passport.
Did any one had this kind of issue before at Vancouver? please share that. How long it will take to return the passport?

Need Advise - Appointment of 8th Nov - Vancouver
Hello Friends,

I've been following this forum and it's very helpful. I have my appointment in Vancouver on 8th Nov. This is my first time H1B.

My Situation: I've been working on CPT since last year and OPT before that. While my H1 petition was pending and we replied to the RFE in Aug, I travelled to Canada on Oct 20th, planned to return on Oct 28th, reason for my visit was to collect my Canadian PR card. My H1B petition was approved on 23rd Oct. That means I cannot return to US on F1 stamping and have to get my H1 stamping here in Canada. Below is the list of documents that I’m carrying.
My Questions:
1. Will there be any complication during the interview?
2. What is the best way that I should explain my situation to the interviewer?
3. Apart from the below list should I carry anymore docs?

H1 complete set – I797, letter to embassy from employer
Passport
Visa appointment
Instructions Page
DS160 confirmation page
Photo
COPR Copy – Canada PR

Client letters
Vendor
Employer Letter - Offer Letter
Pay stubs
Client profile & ID Card
Performance evaluation
Approved Time sheets
Resume
2 years W2 and tax return

Education Certificates
I20s
CPT Agreement letters
OPT EAD Card

Lease agreement
Bank statement
Health insurance

DS160 Payment Confirmation
D6160 full
US Return Tkt

Thank you in advance for your feedback and inputs.

Appointment at Ottawa on Dec 3rd
Hi Friends,

This portal is very helpful. I am going for an interview on Dec 3rd and will share my experience on this thread.

Earlier I booked the appointment at Vancouver on Dec 10th, but moved it Ottawa as I got 1 week early apointment there.

I have a few questions
 - Should I convert USD to CAD to be use in Canada? If Yes, where to get the best rates from?
 - Anybody know if Uber or Lyft works in Ottawa? Or any other taxi service to prefer.
 - I have 2 hour wait between flights in Torronto. Will it be enough for immigration check? Also, I have a change of fligts in Torronto, will my immigration check happen in Torronto or Ottawa?

Thanks

Passport pickup at Ottawa after 221g
My case was moved to 221g after the interview on sept 21st. Then I got a email last Friday mentioning that 221g processing is completed and asked me to submit my passport at US embassy in Ottawa. I submitted the passport on Monday 10/29. They asked me to collect my passport back on Thursday 11/01. When I went back on Thursday, they made me wait for around 1 hour. In the end, they said that they are yet to receive the security clearance from Washington and asked me to come next day.

I’m much frustrated. After the long wait, I was asked to submit my passport. Again it is getting delayed. No idea what is going to happen today. I already booked the flight tickets which I have rescheduled as of now. Anyone in the same situation? And any idea about this security clearance?

Thanks!

I am currently on F1-OPT with my H1b approved. However my automatic change of status got denied and defaulted to consular notify option as I travelled when my H1B was approved.

Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

Vancouver US visa H1B
This website was very helpful and I thought it will be better to share my experience to others.

Completed my DS 160 back in July. Only then I notieced there are no dates available at all in vancover.

I was told that in Vancover they dont open the dates like other consulates. Checked the website around early morning 5 AM to 8 AM PST and suddenly in septemeber I found the dates available for entire october. Booked the OCT 31st slot.

I am FTE working in USA for past 13 years. So I was not expecting any issues.

appt was at 7:15.

Queestion asked:

Have you got any H1B before ?

How long you are workign for the current company.

What is your designation and what is your role.

Visa approved.

Ottawa H1b stamping Oct 31
Interviewed today, Had been looking for appointments for ~ 3weeks, found this one around 10 days ago. My case is straightfoward and I'm a full time employee.

Had 7:45 appointment, waited outside till a little after 7:45, they took all the 7:45 people in first.First desk checks photo, passport, DS160 then you place your belongings thru a security check machine. They had storage option for phones, umbrellas etc.

Next window is inside the consulate, where your documents and petition is checked, my petition number matched their system but it was showing me employed with another company I have never even heard of. This was fixed in 5 mins approx, next window you get fingerprints and another check of photo and passports, they cancel your last stamp here.

Final stop is the actual interview, very simple and the lady was extremely polite.

Q1. Employer and whats your job?

Q2. Salary?

Q3. Travel in last five years?

Asked me to pick up passport on Monday between 3:00 and 3:30.
