What an experience!
Here is our story: we got married on June 5th 2012 in Athens, GA. It was a small wedding ceremony and only our family members were present. We took plenty of pictures together as we knew this would come in handy when I go in for my interview. We exchanged vows and wedding rings and began our new journey together.

My wife and I are both college students living in two separate states. She lives in GA and I live in TN (6 hour difference while driving).

I filed my application on June 21 (I did hire an attorney because I did not want to take any risk) and received a letter back on June 27 saying that they received my file for I-765 and I-485 and gave me a case status online tracking number.

I checked this site from the first day all the way until my interview. (I was way too hyped up and just wanted to hear back news ASAP) But I knew I had to play the waiting game just like everyone else.

Finally on July 1st 2012, I got a letter for my biometrics appointment which was two and a half weeks later (July 18th). Days dragged by, just waiting to get this process done with.

Biometrics was super easy. Just go in to the office, drop in the notice letter in the slot and wait for your name to be called. Then they do the finger printing and out you go.

The wait after biometrics was the worst. I did get the I-485 notice for interview to be held in Memphis, TN on August 30 at 1:00 PM.

Weeks before the interview day, we started gathering every little piece of information that linked us together. I did not have a license or a SSN and I did not live with her currently so I could not sign up on her lease or have health insurance with her or car insurance. The only documents I had were
1. Joint Bank Account
2. Gym Membership
3. Bus tickets on my end and Plane tickets on her end. If you are in a relationship, save EVERY ticket. It will be worth it in the end.
4. We saved a lot of our letters that we wrote to each other, movie tickets, restaurant receipts, adventure tickets, game tickets that we attended
5. Pictures (We saved up at least a 1000 pictures of us being together, with our family, with friends) to show that we were happy and in a serious relationship

The days leading up to the interview, we practiced like this was life or death. We prepared and asked possible interview questions almost every time we talked on the phone. We were so overprepared.

Finally the day came for the interview, I was so nervous going in. I had an attorney present with me to the interview (BEST DECISION EVER MADE).
If you are planning to hire an attorney, I highly recommend you do so. Don't look at the money part, make sure they have a good reputation (like mine was). Our interview appointment was at 1:00 P.M. and we arrived there at 12:35 and waited until our attorney arrived to drop the letter in the slot.

At 12:45, I dropped the letter in the slot and five minutes later, my attorney arrived. I got called in around 1:05 P.M.

When we entered the IO's office, he told us to stand up and lift your right hand to take an oath. We said yes we will only say the truth and then the interview began.

The IO asked me my name, address, and date of birth.
Asked if I had SSN (I said No).
He asked my wife the same thing. My wife had SSN.
He went on to ask me how I met my wife and where we met and when it was. I answered truthfully.
He then went on to ask me the questions about if I had ever committed a crime in the US or helped someone get into the US illegally....I said No.

He asked if we lived together before marriage and I said no.

The gentlemen was SUPER nice. Very friendly and sociable. He was really shocked to see people our age getting married (I was 22 and my wife was 20).

He asked for our joint assets and I gave him EVERYTHING I prepared with. Bus tickets, joint bank account, gym memberships(with our names on it), my wife's plane tickets, PayPal account money transfers.

He then looked at our original birth certificate and original marriage certificate and turned to his computer.
There was silence for at least a minute. My back was sweating, I was so nervous.
Finally he broke the silence with "Congratulations, I am approving your case. You should get your green card within 30 days."
The IO was so kind to us and understood our situation. He also commented right after saying "Man you look like you are about to explode."
I was jumping with joy inside of me. I could not believe it. I have been waiting for this day since 2001 and finally everything I did paid off. I thanked God in my head first and then shook the IO's hand and said Thank you for everything! He printed us an approval letter and walked us out to the door.

I checked my status online and I got the welcome message and that I will soon become a permanent resident (conditionally) since we were married for only 3 months.
My wife and I are so happy right now. But I feel so deflated and drained out by the immigration process. I feel like a giant monkey has been lifted off my back and I am excited to start my future once my green card arrives.

I had to write this post because I read hundreds of posts on here before my interview and they helped me tremendously! I couldn't sleep for weeks so I ended up reading on other people's cases.

I cannot wait for my green card to arrive in the mail!

SO HAPPY!

My I485 Experience (Without Lawyer)
Submitted I485 - 05/30/2012
Biometrics 07/13/2012
Received EAD 08/22/2012
Interview 08/30/2012

I must begin by saying that I was spooked out at first because I listened to soo many stories and everyone of them seemed worse than the last. I visited couple lawyers and that made the situation worse because they wanted the business, so they told me of all different scenarios and their so called 'red-flags' trying to convince me that I needed them. Finally I decided to do everything by myself and not acquire any of their legal 'help' and as it may seem it was the best decision I have made so far.

The interview was pretty much okay, the lady made us feel very comfortable, verified the paperwork and asked for the originals of the papers submitted. We answered everything truthfully and to the best of our knowledge and got the green card approved on the same day.

Tips is to be relaxed on the interview, dont be nervous and pray about it. Good luck to you all.

Adjustment of status
I-485 package received on March 22,2012
Finger Print Done -May 01,2012
Interview for AOS: June 26,2012

the lady was kinda of nasty, she seemed not convinced at all and said she want to have a look at it first and didn't approve it same day. We are married for real and have every document (tax, insurance, bill etc) except joint house lease. we don't have a joint lease bcoz I live in another state studying. We told her this, we were confident on the interview but the lady kind of seem never convinced. I keep checking online and finally got approved exactly after 5 weeks from the interview date (aug 01 ).

Advice: Just be confident on the interview and have all the documents. I have all the documents and a legal student status for 2 more yrs plus a clean record in every thing.
Good luck

Awesome
Wow !!!
I never expected this to be so quick.

7/13 - Submitted Application
7/13 - Priority Date
7/20 - Biometrics Appt letter received
8/3 - Biometrics Appt
8/11 - Interview Appt letter received
9/13 - Interview scheduled. <Fingers crossed>

I guess submitting all documents correctly at the start with correct filing fees helped. Also i did not apply for EAD (i have H1b) which must have helped the process to be faster.

It is a Question
More than my experience is a question I want somebody to help me with this. I came to USA with a K1 Visa, I married my husband within the 90 days from my arrival. After geting married I filed or applied for adjust status and I received a non-permanent residence for 2 years, this non- permanent residence expires on March 2013. My doubts or questions are:
1- When or at what time do I have to file for permanent residence (GC) or adjust status?
2- Can I file for permanent residence before the non-permanent expires? Can I do it now? or do I have to wait until expiration of the non-permanent?
3- How long will it last until I received my permanent residence (GC)?
Thanks everybody and will appreciate if someone can help me with my doubts.

My i-485 experience
Hi All,

This website has been very helpful with my journey from K1 to i-485. Here's my experience to share:

04/16 i-485 filed
04/28 Biometrics appointment letter received
05/14 Completed biometrics appointment
05/19 Another biometrics appointment letter received (i had to redo mine)
06/04 Redid my biometrics
06/23 EAD combo card received
06/23 Interview appointment letter received
07/25 Interview & approval on the spot. (GC to arrive in the mail within 7 - 10 days)
07-30 I'm still waiting for my GC to arrive

The interview process was a breeze. We got there about 45 minutes earlier and as soon as 2pm came (which was our interview time), our name was called. The officer was friendly and as soon as we swore to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, the questions began. Where did I meet my husband? How was our wedding like? Why did we wait so long to get married (we were dating long distance for 10 years) and finally to see our supporting documents: things that had both our names on and photos of the wedding. I didn't have many printed out photos so I just showed the officer all the photos on my iPad. And then we were done. Officer congratulated us and advised us that in 2 years, we will have to file a GC renewal. We were in and out in 10 mins. I suppose this only happens when we already have all our documents ready. So, be ready when you go in for your interview.

Good luck!

I have read many helpful posted experiences in this website. Therefore, I wanna share my own since I have passed my interview on the spot just in the end of May.

My interview was 8 am and I arrived at 7:15. I got called in at 8 and the interview was lasting about 20-30 minutes.
Here are some extremely important tips that I think helped me pass the interview a lot.

1. Dress neat and properly which means you have to give the interviewer a very good impression when he or she first sees you. I personally think a good impression can lead the interview to a successful result.

2. Be calm and confident. Do not show any confusion, hesitation or nervousness. Relax, relax and relax. The more natural you act, the better you are trusted by the interviewer.

3. Bring as many as evidences you can. I did show the interviewer photos, cards, lease agreement and bank statements.

Even the whole interview was longer than I thought but it was pretty relaxing since the interviewer was very nice and friendly. He ased many questions but all of them were very basic questions such as how you guys met? Where do you live now? Where do you work? Also, he spent most of the time just reviewing the I-485 and I-130 which was just the basic info of both parties. So, do not panic! It is not as scary as you think!
I have been there and I know how everybody feels. Well prepared, relax, pray to God every single night ( I did this and I think it worked), be positive!

Best wishes to all of you :)
