Renunciation Procedure using VFS

No problem. It was frustrating for me initially too! Did you get any e-mail for your application status from VFS? I only got confirmation that VFS received. It's been a week now. According to e-mail they should review the application within 48-72hrs. It's been more than 72 hrs and I didn't get any e-mail yet !!!!

Yeah. as tinak mentioned, now VFS is giving only 1 FedEx label to print, the return label they will only print and send. They changed the process and nowhere it is mentioned. ( for Renunciation)

On VFS site, Add New Customer section...

The 2nd field is about Passport number. Is it going to be Indian passport or newly acquired US passport ?


It just happened that when I entered US passport and the message was something like "Govt Reference Number (ARN)" not found "
and then when I entered Indian passport, it found the ARN and allowed me to go to the next step and submitted fees as well.


In the Application Confirmation email, I see the following columns

Customer Name -
Reference No
Passport Number - My Indian Passport Number (is this correct) ?
Govt Reference Number -
Application Category - Naturalized after June 1 2010......



In the Document checklist too there is passport No - Do I need to enter Indian or US passport no ?

It is so confusing on VFS site, whereas the Indian Consulate Site was so clear. It clearly stated Foreign Passport field separately.

I applied for my renunciation a few weeks back and last week for my wife. I had 2 courier labels (From and To) for my application, but only 1 courier label for my wife's appl. I saw another person saying only 1 label was printed. Can someone help with this. Thanks

I have the same issue. I send VFS an e-mail and got reply today after a week. I called their hotline # ** 800 320 9625. Now they are not giving us a return label immediately, only from/outgoing label. After the renunciation, they will generate a return label and send it back to you. I requested them to post it on the VFS site to create less confusion for customers. Hopefully, that helps. I got this reply from VFS today:

We would like to inform you that you do not need to send the return shipping label it would be generated by the VFS Centre while shipping the package back to you.

Mostly looks like VFS has changed the process a little bit where they are no longer needing applicants to send the return labels. Vfs will print the return labels on their end just like how it used to happen with Ckgs.

Yes, sir got it this week. Took just over a month. Some VFS locations are taking longer like SFO.

I will keep the question open: Is anybody used VFS system FedEX system lately? Any trouble downloading the return label? Any response will be much appreciated since I'm scared to send my documents without a return label and mow stuck for last two days even after purchasing VFS courier service (:

tinak I was able to download both outgoing and return label from VFS portal during both my renunciation and OCI applications. Don't know if they changed the system now. May be now VFS might be printing the return label themselves and not asking applicants to print and send! Need to confirm from more recent or current applicants.

Additional particular form is not needed. Again VFS instructions is a like a maze! Instructions says us to send 2 photos. However, I sent only 1 photo stuck on the government application form and no extra ones and it was accepted. In OCI application, I had sent 2 photos just to be sure but they returned 1 photo back with the US passport. They are too lazy or indifferent to correct and update their instructions.as they know we can't go to any other provider for Consular needs. It's a monopoly!

Thanks for your prompt reply again and for informing additional form not needed. I checked at VFS webiste today and they removed the additional particular form from the checklist. 100% percent agree with you that VFS system is a maze. A simple renunciation process it's taking so long that I can never imagine solely because of agent's negligence !!! Most frustrating part that we all have to pay extra unnecessary fees for the monopoly. Some people want to take the advantage of pandemic situation too.

This is strange as others including me and you I believe have got a professional looking renunciation certificate and not the badly formatted 1 that applicant fill themselves and send.

that's just the way they send it unfortunately. mine was folded exactly the same way and tied with my canceled indian passport with a rubber band. the surrender certificate as important as it is, is only needed when you apply for visa/oci. once you get oci, you're not required to carry it around with you if you are in india even on a permanent basis. the original certificate should be kept aside along with your vital document. most likely you will never need it in your life time. just make a few copies for safe keeping.

I did get the canceled Passport. but the Renunciation Certificate is just not looking professional certificate at all .It is the same form we filled and sent from the PDF from their site .The Renunciation certificate was folded like 4 times and even hard for me to recognize that as an official document which need to be kept with us for ever (As per the instructions in the bottom of that certificate ).
