Surrender Certificate

Applied for surrender certificate from CGI Houston. While I'm 100% certain I had attached all documents, I got a phone call indicating that the naturalization certificate was missing. Emailed them a scanned copy of it and it was accepted. Received surrender certificate and canceled passport within 1 week.

Recently on Apr 27, 2022, myself and my wife became naturalized citizens. Yesterday I started working for Renunciation process through VFS site step by step guide.

I completed Step 2 of Online Govt application site by filling all particulars and also printed the form. There was a little doubt on one item in the application. In the application they are asking to fill the “Indian PP details” ( PP was issued in Feb 2019) including family details of Father, Mother etc, and also they are asking Nationality of Spouse. Here I got confused, what to indicate. Since they are asking Indian PP details, I indicated my wife’s nationality as India . I do not know whether I am right to indicate INDIA (since she obtained US naturalization only on 27 April 2022). Plz advise me , by the by what did you indicate. Did you write USA or India? If I made a mistake, then do I have restart the Govt Application again , even though I got the ARN for the Govt application that I already filled . Your advice will be appreciate3d.

Secondly, after printing the Govt form, I went to step 3 of the VFS site and got stuck up. Since I did not register with VFS , I started creating an a/c by registering with particulars , they sent a mail to activate . I activated and got a message that my A/c was successfully activated. Then I tried to login into VFS A/c with my password,, but could not be logged. The reason is not known. Every time it says, activate even though I got msg of activation, and one time it says “Application not found” and many times when I log in, it says “ Access Denied” error 1020 and the owner , (I.e. VFS) be contacted to resolve the issue. As such I am unable to proceed with step 3 onwards.

I do not know whether you faced such problems. Plz guide me as how to proceed Step 3. Do you advise to use fedex service to submit the application. I want to pay the fee by cashier checks. If I send by UPS , do I need to pay for return fee or VFS will pay themselves for returning my pp with certificate.

I am an old man of 83 yrs, and am not familiar with this, as such my request to you to kindly help me

Hi All,

Received my surrender certificate & Indian passport, below are the timelines for reference.
11th Feb 2022: Applied with all the documents & Indian passport to VFS INDIA Consular Application Centre - San Francisco via Fedex
15th Feb 2022: Application received acknowledgment from VFS
24th Feb 2022:Application has been review by Embassy of India/Consulate General of India & will be dispatched using the courier service you had opted.
25th Feb 2022: Received surrender certificate & Indian passport with "Cancelled" stamp via Fedex.

My wife obtained US citizenship and trying to surrender herIndian passport in VFS website. in site It's asking for Minor child details and passport. My son still holding Indian passport only and yet to receive his naturalization certificate/passport. It was confusing whether I should provide his Indian passport details and submit my wife's Renunciation application or wait till my son gets his naturalization/passport.

I am still waiting for my naturalization and holding Indian passport only.

I am trying to start an application on VFS site for Renunciation / Surrender of passport. Not sure what needs to be selected for the field "Application Category" in the first page. The options are:
* Naturalized after June 1 2010 and does have a stamp (Cancelled due to acquiring US/Foreign nationality)
* Naturalized after June 1 2010 and does NOT have a stamp (Cancelled due to acquiring US/Foreign nationality)
* Naturalized on or before June 1 2010 and does have a stamp (Cancelled due to acquiring US/Foreign nationality)
* Naturalized on or before June 1 2010 and does NOT have a stamp (Cancelled due to acquiring US/Foreign nationality)

I have to select one of the first 2 options. But what does the "have a stamp (Cancelled due to acquiring US/Foreign nationality)" even mean ?

If you have used the VFS site to apply for Renunciation, would love to get your opinion about the option to be chosen here.

I want to know more about surrender passport in India. I understand in Mumbai only st Bandra RPO surrendering passport is active.
I have few doubts.
- what documents are required
- if I have only the Indian passport and valid passport for other national will that be accepted
- will the agent/attended person ask for visa or anything like old cancelled passport
- if anything is missing from above how much penalty is being charged

Please it anyone know about it let me know

My child automatically became a US citizen after I was naturalized by using the derived citizenship law for children under 18 in US(Note: My wife is still not a US citizen). There is no law requiring my child to have a Naturalization Certificate as you can get US passport without Naturalization Certificate. I wanted to apply for Renunciation of Indian Passport and dont know if 1) both parents needs to be naturalized before I apply for Renunciation Certificate for my child. 2) Can i apply for Renunciation of Indian Passport without Naturalization Certificate. I will appreciate any help regarding this matter as Renunciation of Indian Passport is very confusing on VFS website.

Hi, I've not received my renunciation certificate but I wanted to share my timelines as of date.

5th March 2021 - Applied to VFS via FedEx
9th March 2021 - VFS email acknowledgment receipt
26th March 2021 - Application under process at VFS
26th March 2021 - Processed at VFS and 'In transit' to the Embassy

Yes (you read it correct), on 26th I received 2 emails about application under process and application processed at VFS and submitted to Embassy.

Hello ,
1) I started the process and completed Consular (Govt form) in Dec 2020 and then came back and completed/Submitted VFS form in Jan 2021. On the checklist there is a important reminder which says " Online applications are only accepted if submitted in the current year"

Does this mean I have to fill out Govt form and VFS form all over again since Govt Form has a date of Dec 2020 and VFS form has a date of Jan 2021 ?

2) On VFS website while creating application they ask for passport number., I understand that will be my INDIAN passport number . Seems a lot of folks having this same question

3) I am paying the fees by cashiers cheque... Do I need to have a single Cashiers checqe for Consular fee+ICFW fee+VFS service fee in favor of "VFS Global Services (USA) Inc or multiple?

4) I am using USPS for "To" and "return" shipment . While creating USPS return shipment it asks to select a return label date which cannot be more than 3 days beyond the current date . Will that be an issue for VFS to return my documents ? I don't think the return labels/code expires but wasn't sure as it is weird
