Parents did not get visitors visa at Bombay Consulate
Hi,

I am Hiren Patel, currently at New Jersey, US. I had my parents visitors visa stamping at Bombay Consulate on May 7th-2008. They got rejection under Immigration Act 214(b) [Intending Immigrant Provision]. Following was the scenario.

I am the only son and have 3 sisters. I am the only one here in US and all my sisters are in India. My elder sister is married and settled in Surat, Gujarat. I have two younger sisters [both unmarried].

My Father's real sister is in USA [via Immigration visas] and My Mom's two brothers and a Sister is here in USA [via Immigration visas]

We had interview in Gujarati at Bombay consulate.

Questions asked to my Dad (my dad is self employed):

1. Whom are you visiting? - My Son [Hiren]
2. What is he doing in US? - Working as programmer
3. Employer details
4. What are you doing? - Self employed as Govt Approved Contractor
5. What is your income? - 1 Lakh (annual)
6. Who else is there in US? - My dad told that his sister is here.
7. What is she doing? - She is working in Laundramat.

Questions asked to my mom (my mom is house wife):
1. Who else is there in US? - My mom mentioned that her Brother and Sis are there.
2. What are they doing? - Own business
3. How long do you want to be there? - 3 Months
4. Why not 6 months? - My mom told that I have two unmarried daughters whom I should take care of and also 3 Months are enough for us to visit US and meet Hiren for a while.

Finally ----> Rejection

I am planning to retry. Any suggestions are most welcome.

Parents got visa - Mumbai consulate :-))
My parents got visa on 5/19/2008 - 10yrs multiple from Mumbai consulate.
They had chosen Guajarati interpreter. Their appointment was at 8.30am.
There were 4 couples standing in the queue before my parents. 3 of them got rejected.
Here's how it went (whole conversation was in Guajarati, because the VO himself was an Indian, speaking Guajarati):-

Dad: Good Morning
VO: Good morning

VO: Who is in US?
Dad: My daughter, her family and my son.

VO: What is their status?
Dad: Daughter is a permanent resident and son is on H1B.

VO: How many children do you have in India? (Tricky question - My parents have only 2 kids)
Dad: None. I have 2 children and both of them are in US.

VO: So, if both of your kids are in US, why will you come back to India? You might stay there.
Dad: My dad answered appropriately, showing strong ties.

VO: So how many months visa do you need?
Dad: 1 or 2 months max.

VO: Ok, your visa is approved. You will receive your passport in the mail.

No documents asked.
They received their passport yesterday and it had 10 years multiple visa.

We are so happy. Lesson for all of us –
ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH. AND DON'T BE AFRAID IF BOTH THE KIDS ARE IN USA. BUT JUST TELL THE FACTS.

Parents got visa at Chennai
Hi
First of all , thanks a lot to the Immihelp community. I prepared all documents for my parents per this website and it was very useful in building up confidence that we had all avenues covered.

We were slightly worried since both my sister and myself live in the US.

My parents went to the consulate at 2.30 for their 3.30 appointment and were let in immediately.

We had booked an English appointment but were given the option to interview in Tamil since the line opened up.However my parents decided to stay in the same line.

VO: Good afternoon
Parents: Good afternoon
VO: So, you are a doctor? ( I guess he got this information from the I-156 document)
Dad: Yes. I am a consulting physician and I have practised for X years.
VO: What does your son do in the US?
Dad: My son works as a X in company Y. My daughter works at X. We are having her wedding in September in Chennai ( I am not sure why he gave all this information at once.Maybe there was one followup question about my sister)
VO: Do I get an invitation for the wedding? (joking)
Dad: (mistaking that he wants to see the invitation starts to take it out of his bag)

VO : (smiles) You are approved. Please enjoy your trip.

They mentioned that their case was the quickest and it hardly took 2 minutes. They also mentioned that most of the applicants were parents and there were 4 rejects - mostly women who came there by themselves.

All in all a good experience. So my 2 cents for anyone who is applying for their visa is be confident and tell the truth at all times. Both my sister and me are here and a lot of people advised us not to mention this fact or say that my sister lives in India. I think this kind of advice is dangerous and unnecessary.

All the best!
