US Citizenship Interview With a Misdeaminor Petty Theft
This is an update from my last post. I see a lot of posters here never update. So I am based on few emails I've gotten. U can see my last post too.

In 2007 I was arrested and convicted of petty theft (am sorry) Never again. Since I had to wait 3yrs (if married to a US citizen) before I can apply for Citizenship. Got my GC, June 2004.

Aug 17 2011: Application N-400 received

Aug 17 2011 biometrics Appointment sent.

Sept 12 2011: Went for Biometrics, No cell phone allowed, Done in Less than 20mins.

Oct 7 2011: Received Letter of Interview in the mail.

Before my interview. Spoke to my lawyer. He advice me to get few letters of recommendations from churches. I do not go to church or Mosque. So I got from my Boss at work. Some from other American I've known. He also adviced me to write a written statement about the crime and apologize for my shameful act which I did. I wrote a statement regretting my actions and taking full responsibility. (They won't ask for this. So I had to tell them I'll love to include that with my application) Luckily I had my conviction expunged 2mos earlier. So the expungement was granted just before my interview.

Nov 19 2011: Interview day, got there @ 6:00am long line outside. Was in by 8:15. 9:15 I was called in by the Officer had my interview. A female officer. Asked me few questions. She didn't even ask for all the documentations I was asked to bring. I passed the Civics and English test. She only asked if I had other criminal history. I said NO. She said because the court papers did not show that I paid the court fines after my conviction, I'll have to provide that. So she gave me 30days to send that in. She said its takes 120days to reach a decision. But a denial comes within 30days. If its more than 30days after interview I should almost expect an approval. (My lawyer also said it. A denial comes sooner than an approval) interview took 15min or less.

Dec 12 2011: I sent in the proof of payment of the court fine. So the wait began. I hoped for the best. Expected the worst.

Jan 23 2012: Got an email Alert that my application has been put in line to be scheduled for an Oath. Yayyyyyy this was one of my happiest day.......

Jan 30 2012: Got my Oath Letter for Feb 22.

Feb 22 2012: Attended Oath. Became Naturalized.

EMAIL ME IF You have any question. Wish everyone goodluck. And pls stay away from crimes. Especially if u still a GC holder.

My wife submitted her N0400 form on September 2011 based upon her 3 year marriage to a U.S. Citizen. She did her biometrics about a month later. We then waited for the appointment interview letter which came in late December with the appointment scheduled for February 6, 2012. i do want to make a few observations regarding our preparation for the interview.

My wife studied long and hard to learn the answers to the 100 questions. She used all the tools that are available on the USCIS website. We took the approach that we wanted to answer any potential questions that the interviewer might have BEFORE he/she asked them. We took a 3 ring binder and inserted all of the documents that we were instructed to bring. We included tabs identifying each document. I was a bit concerned because we were requested to bring our tax returns for the past 3 years. Those years would be 2008,2009 & 2010. I had lived and worked outside the U.S. for about 10 years before my wife and I returned in July 2008. I had paid foreign taxes so was not required to file a U.S. Return. The only U.S. income that I received in 2008 was my SS Benefits. I got the 2009 & 2010 transcript from the IRS and an income benefit statement from the SS for 2008. I also copied from the IRS website the part that showed that the income I had received was below the IRS filing threshhold . I wrote a short memo explaing all of this and put it into the tax folder.

Immigration is evidently very serious in verifying your place of residence. We prepared copies of our joint bank accounts (We put only one month in the file, but had all of the others just in case), my wife's NY State issued ID and our dated apartment lease. We have lived in the same apartment for 2 1/2 years and enjoy a good relationship with our landlords who live above us. Our landlady prepared a memo attesting that we had lived there continuously for the entire period. She had this document notarized. We included that in the residence tab as well.

When the official called my wife for the interview, he first asked the usual questions (name, address etc.), and then he asked her SS#. Luckily she had memorized that. He asked random questions from the list of 100, and she answered the first 6 correctly. He stopped at 6. When he got to the documents phase, my wife opened the notebook. He immediately pulled it over in front of him, and went through the tabs. He kept commenting things like "Very Good" or "Excellent". The entire process took only about 15 minutes, and he gave her the Congratulations Letter. It was late afternoon, so he said that they do not issue Oath Letters after 2:00pm, so one would be mailed. She received the Oath Letter the following Friday only 5 days after her interview. Her Oath day is March 9, 2012.

I can only say that if you prepare carefully for the interview and try to make the Interviewer's job easier, your chances of being approved are enhanced. Good luck to all of you.

I am impressed how much difference of time takes for everyone to do the paperwork.
My application was approved Feb 25, 2011, went to the finger print in May, got my interview and tests Aug8 and since them haven't received any notification for the final Oath Ceremony.
Don't understand why. Maybe this office have some problems, they said when l went with an InfoPass that my case is approved and schedule in the list for the Oath Ceremony but until today l haven't got the letter. ?? I pray to God for the miracle to happen!
