B1 Visa
Hi,

I first applied back in 2003 for a visitor visa and i was refused. I was not well prepared , too young and actually didnt had any fair motive to visit.

Next i applied in 2008 for a B1 , which was refused because i was not able to establish my ownership in the company which was run by me , but actually owned by my sibling. Also i was single that time , but now i have a wife and child.

I applied a afresh and was interviewed yesterday ie. 14th aug 2013 :

After the ofc , fingerprints and photos etc. i went to the new delhi embassy and as i crossed barriers and queues i was getting more nervous , but once i reached the lobby area and saw ongoing interviews i started to calm down , though not a lot and finally came my token number and here it goes :

Visa officer , a young and beautiful girl probably less than 30 yrs of age :

vo: good morning

Me: Good morning

vo: Can i have your passport
( handed over)
vo: why do you want to visit USA ?

me: my clothing brand has to participate in a fashion show.
vo: which fashion show
me: Boston Fashion week
vo: where is it ?
me: Boston
( VO typing , typing , typing)

VO: How long have you been running the business ?
Me: 7 years
VO: you own the company since 7 years ?
Me: No , i own the company since 2008 ( meaning since 5 years )
vo: ok
( VO typing , typing , typing)

( My ds160 said i was arrested under PITA act 1956 , two of my factory workers , a male and female were found alone in a locked hall in year 2011 and i was accused and arrested for owning the premises , though i was unaware about the entire situation , i had to mention this on my DS 160 , just to be honest )

vo: you were arrested for harsh driving ?
( Now i dont know she was trying to be clever or she didnt understand the meaning of PITA , Prevention of immoral trafficing act , with words "Traffic" )
Me: No , it was PITA , means some suspicious couple was found in my factory ...... and i tried to say more ...
VO: ohhh... ok ( i didnt complete my explanation )

vo: What does your father do ?
Me: He has his own business.

( VO typing , typing , typing)

And finally the grand golden words...

VO: Ok sir , i am approving your visa , you will get a message within 2 working days. Thank you

ME: Thank you very much.

and i walked out looking for my phone with a big hidden cheeky smile :) , atlast conquered after 10 years. And yeah the big bunch of documents , photos etc. which i took , she didnt even ask for the invite letter , not a single document.

So the moral of the story and what most of the threads below read is that be very specific to questions , either yes and no , or one liners , no extra information. Dont get nervous and try to get calm , reply honestly and think before replying. Please remember that what you filled in DS 160 should match exactly to what you speak out.

Good luck guys.

B1/B2 VISA experience chennai
Hi,
Thanks Immihelp and to all the individuals who shared their experiences here. It helped me a lot for preparing for my visa interview.

A little flash back: I had applied for b1 visa in 2009 and denied under section 214(b). I was under the assumption that it is more or less a document verification process than an interview. But I WAS WRONG and I realized that VOs rely more on our statements at interview to determine whether we are eligible or not. For that they may/may not ask documents.

Now I got an opportunity and I reapplied for the VISA. My appointment dates were
7-Aug-2013 ,12:00 PM -> OFC Appointment.
8-Aug-2013,8:30 AM -> Visa Interview.

1st day- OFC Appointment
I started from my hotel at 11:15 AM. I took my passport, appointment letter and DS-160 confirmation page. I was wearing formals. I was aware that OFC center is 4 km far from my hotel so I thought of going by auto and it will take maximum 15 mins to reach there. When I stepped out from my hotel one auto guy approached me and asked “US OFC Center?” I really astonished, how come he knows that I am going to OFC???. I said “Yes” .Next qn: “When is the appointment time?” , me :“12:00”. He:”Ok..I will take you to there and I can wait till you finished and will drop back to hotel , just give me YYYY rupees”. Oh my god..I told him that I can’t give that much amount and can give max “ZZZ” rupees. He agreed and while travelling he told me “If no rush, it will get over by 10 mins and tomorrow when is the appointment time???”. Me: “8:30 AM”. He:”Ok It is better to start by 7:45 AM and there it will take more time for the interview.” by that time we reached OFC center at 11:30 AM. There were no rush , I approached security and they checked my appointment letter and passport and verified the details and allowed me to enter in to the building. When I entered the office they did security check and again shown my appointment letter and DS-160 confirmation and allowed me to enter a hall. This is the place where they will be taking our 10 fingers impression and take our photo. That’s it. By 11:45 am I was out and the auto guy was standing there. While coming back he told me that he will be there tomorrow at 7:45 AM in front of my hotel.

2nd day- VISA interview
I woke up at 5:30 AM and got ready by 6:30AM. Had breakfast. Took all the documents. I was carrying all the documents in a transparent folder. And I was wearing formal dress with company tag around my neck. And came out from my hotel at 7:45 AM. My auto guy was standing there :-). While travelling he told me that here it will take more than two hrs to finish the interview..Reached the consulate by 7:55 AM. There were two separate long queues. One for 8:30 and another for 9:00. I joind the 8:30 queue. By 8:45 AM I was in and they stick token number on my pass port while entering. Again security checks and verified the thumb impression. And told me to wait. All these time I was practicing my answers in my mind. By 9:20 they allowed me to go to another building. This is the place where the actual interview is going on. While entering in to the hall you can hear VOs asking the questions. I was very nervous and tensed and I decided not to listen them, I was looking in to the TV screen for my token number. Finally my token number displayed and went to the respective counter. My VO was a young American guy who looks very jolly and friendly. In front of me there were two applicants. For both he approved the VISA. Now it’s my turn. He called me to come forward.

Me: Hi, Good morning Sir.

VO: Hey..Good morning. Can I have your passport please?
Me: Yes Sir (I Passed my passport).

VO: Ok, for what purpose you are going?
Me: Sir, we have been developing various software applications to our client YYYY .inc. Recently we have been offered a new project called ZZZ. And I was selected by my management to visit YYYY office in US for requirement gathering.

VO: Oh..for requirement gathering. How long you are going to be there?
ME: 4 weeks.(I thought next question will be regarding the duration but..)

VO: Whom and all you are going to meet there?
ME: I am going to meet Mr.ZZZ who is the head of research and development.

VO: Only one person you are going to meet for the entire requirement?
Me: No Sir, since this project has three sub applications I am going to meet respective managers also. But Mr .ZZZ is the coordinator for this process.

VO: Where the development is going to happen?
Me: In India

VO: When you are going to start the development?
Me: October 1st week.

VO: How long will it take to complete it?
Me: It will take 1 year.

VO: Ok.. Your VISA is approved.
Me: Thank You, Sir.

He didn't ask any other documents other than passport. That’s It and I was out from the consulate by 10:30 AM.
That’s my experience.
If your visa is refused no need to worry we can always reapply. Here are some links if you want to know more about refusal.
1. http://www.immihelp.com/visas/refusal.html

be prepare for your interview ,practice your answers. took all the documents relevant to your visa category. That will give you confidence. Believe in god and more over believe in you and everything will be alright…all the best…
Thanks

B1/B2 VISA got approved in my first attempt
Dear All,

I really thank for this site for giving me so much information and confidence on how to handle the VO at the time of interview. Anyways my VISA interview was schedules on August 13th at 9 A.M. US embassy Chennai. I left my home at 7.30 am and reached there by 8 am and I paid Rs.100 for auto-man (known person - in the end I will mention why I told the auto fare). So saw the big queue was bifurcated with two lines and I have to struggle for an hour there and finally I got inside by 10 a.m. I was bit nervous though tried to be relaxed. I got my token and waiting for my chance and saw the screen flashing my number made to search for counter ## and it was a lady who is interviewing a girl (student) got VISA approved and next was a old couple who wants to visit their grand children in USA and even they got VISA approved. Now it's my turn and kept relaxed and my heart beat went #### here it goes........

VO: Halo Good morning (with a smile)
ME: Good morning! How are you? (Smiled)

VO: Passport please
ME:Given

VO: which company are you working for?
ME: Said

VO: What is the purpose of travel to USA ?
ME: General Meetings and Discussions

VO: Where is USA?
ME: Andover

VO: Is that in Mississippi ? (with a raised eyebrow-she was trying to check me)
ME: No, It is in Massachusetts (with a smile)

VO: How long are you working in that company ?
ME: Said

VO: What is you salary p.a ?
ME: Said

VO: What is you designation ?
ME: Process lead

VO: what you mean by process lead ? what is you role ?
ME: Team leader and need to manage the team by performing GL and some financial activities.

VO: Raised her eye brow and nodding her head. (seems she is not convinced with my answer)
ME: Maam! It is something like a managerial role.

VO: Ok :)
ME: Thanks.

VO: Earlier which company you were working for ?
ME: said

VO: Can you please spell it once again?
ME: It is Standard Chartered bank and headquarters is in London.

VO: What is your salary there?
ME: said

VO: What is your job responsibility ?
ME: Said

VO: Do you have finance graduate background ?
ME: Yes maam! I'm MBA (spl in Finance and marketing) and I have traveled to Australia also for my graduation
VO: Which year?
ME: Said and checked my passport for Australian VISA.

VO: How long are you going to stay in USA ?
ME: 4 weeks

VO: Can you please tell me the schedule for 4 weeks.
ME: 1st week will be introduction with board of members and office staff. 2nd & 3rd week will be requirement gathering and 4th week will be closure of meetings and discussions and shook hands to bid bye to office staff and return to India. (don't forget to mention that you are RETURNING TO INDIA)

VO: Can you show your client invite letter ?
ME: Showed!

VO: What kind of business are they into ?
ME: Healthcare (she was typing something in her system)

VO: Are you married? (for B1 VISA this question is not necessary but she asked coz my spouse name was not filled in passport)
ME: yes

VO: Do you have kids ? what is the age ?
ME: said

VO: Do you have marriage certificate ?
ME: No maam! I don't have marriage certificate. (i was shocked whether they will ask marriage certificate also for B1)

VO: Please wait and she was typing something and asked me to hold a minute. After that she left the counter with my passport.
ME: I was literally waiting and thought that it is going to be rejected.

VO: Came back to the counter and said sorry for holding you. Do you have pictures of your family ?
ME: Yes Maam! But it is in my mobile and I'm not supposed to bring that inside embassy premises. Moreover I got married in 2011 and this passport was issued in 2004 and that's why you can't see my spouse name updated.

VO: Lady said Ok :) with a smile! Ok Sir! I'm approving you VISA and within weeks time it will reach you. Have happy journey.
ME: Thank you maam! (With a load of happiness inside me and left the place with a smile)

I rapped my file and getting ready to exit and saw the time was almost 11.30 AM. Went outside with relaxed mood and found a auto who is a big cheat but I don't want to bargain at this stage and I paid him Rs. 260/-. My total auto fare is to and fro is Rs. 360/-.

So guyz be confident whatever you are telling just tell confidently. I was totally fumbled and lost when VO asked my marriage certificate but still I tried to convince her by giving valid reasons. So keep faith till the last minute which can change anything from Good starting to bad ending/good ending. Be ready to face the questions. All the best guyz!!

Your Visa Approved!! 1 Month
Thanks to immihelp and the users who shared their experience here. I went through all of the pages and got very good answers to VO's question.
I got Visa approved on 6th of August @ Delhi Embassy. It was my first attempt and i was really scared of getting rejected(this is not the end of the world :-)). While filling DS160 I filled 1 month duration but later on i came to know that it should have been 1~2 weeks only for B1. (if you have applied for 1 month then visa rejection chances are very high else you should have a strong convincing reason for 4 weeks). So I practiced all answeres well before interview.

I was wearing formal plain sky-blue shirt and jeans along with sports shoos(No Tie). I tried to wear my company tag(As i read some experiences) but security persons asked me to keep it in pocket :-(.
After all checks and processing i got counter number 11 for my interview. A lady was sitting there. I was standing in queue. There were 2 more candidates in my row. I was last. Standing in Interview queue and waiting for my turn was very horrible moment. and then finally my turn came...My heartbeats would be @ 140..I could clearly hear my heartbeats and feel the pressure inside me. But i was pretending to be very cool and calm. :-)
Here my inter starts:
Me: Good morning officer.
Vo: good morning, your passport please.

Vo: Why are you going to US?
me: Meetings with clients and knowledge sharing with US staff.

VO: Why do you need 4 weeks for meetings?
me:I have two meetings with clients, and a knowledge sharing session of two weeks with US staff. I mentioned dates of meetings and training very clearly.

VO: Ok, Have you visited any country before? If yes tell me the dration.
Me: Yes, mentioned the duration for each one.

VO: Are you going to meet Clients or your Parent company?
Me: Both, I have meeting with both.

VO: Who is your client?
Me: Gave name

VO: Total exp.?
ME. X Years Y months

VO: Exp in current company?
Me: X Years Y months

VO: How yours current company and it's parent company in US co-work?
ME: (little puzzled). explained clearly.

VO: What is your role in current company?
me: I am leading a team of 14 engineers,..blaw blaw blaw

VO: Ok, Yor Visa approved
ME: Thanks :-)

No document asked other than passport.

B1/B2 Visa Approved - 2+ months
Guys, I usually I dont comment on any forum but this forum really helped me on my preparation. Like other, I have put in my experience, if it helps even one, would be happy,

Thumb rules
>Its natural to be tensed, every one is, so once you know you are going to an interview make sure you practice go through this forum answer yourself in front of the mirror for the questions. Do it once you wake up and before you go to sleep (It fixes the answer in your sub concious, hence less chances of fumbling)
>You are not going to US to replace someone or doing "PRODUCTIVE" (never use this word) work
>Safe and best use "Business meeting" on your invite letter if travel is less than 2-3 weeks.
>Honesty is the best policy. Dont argue, accept the facts.

Travel dates more than 2-3 months
>This is the part where everyone gets stuck, dont mention on your invite letter as "TRAINING", 8 out of 10 chances are rejected.
>It would better for you to tell that your are going to share knowledge with them, than they training you.

VO: GM
Me:GM
VO: Can I have your passport pls
ME: Gave them
VO: why do you want to travel to US
ME: Knowledge sharing with US staff
VO: Do you work for XYZ company?
ME: Yes
VO: How many employees work in ABC location in US XYZ company
ME: 1000+ (Note: if the number is too small say 50-100 they might reject on the ground that its not a big company)
VO: How long?
ME: 2 months
VO: wow!!! could you please explain me in detail the purpose
ME: told that I am going to share knowledge with them and when I RETURN BACK TO INDIA THE losses are minimized.
VO: typing for about a minute and said "Remember you cannot do any productive work during the stay" however I am approving your visa.

Remember guys no productive work. and mention the word Return back to home or when i come back home (assuring that you will be back) Hope this helps!!!
