Cracked US B1 in 1st Shot - New Delhi
My Name is Sameer and i am from Chandigarh.

I am sharing my experience of B1 visa interview which was held in New Delhi and i cleared the same in my first shot.

As it’s a two day process (Day 1: OFC Round and Day 2: Interview with Consulate), make sure that you reach at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time slot.

Dress Up: I wore a normal formal dress but there were guys too who were wearing suits also. So it’s all your call.

Documents: Make sure that you take all the required documents and their photocopies along with you. Please find below the list of important documents to take along with you. (It is not really mandatory that the consulate will ask you for the documents but to be on the safe side make sure you have it all with you)

1. PASSPORT
2. Interview Appointment Letter
3. DS-160 Confirmation Letter
4. Visa Fees Payment Receipt
5. Invitation Letter from San Diego
6. Health Insurance coverage letter
7. Educational Certificates
8. Joining Letter of Current Employer
9. Experience Letters from Previous Employers
10. Income Tax Returns / Form 16 (If any)
11. Latest 3 Salary Slips
12. Savings (Insurance etc) If any

(Although the consulate just asked me for my PASSPORT only and nothing else. But make sure you have them all)

INTERVIEW

Day 1: OFC (Documents, Photograph, Fingerprints Check)

Day 1 of your interview won’t be taking more than 20-30 minutes. Your DS-160 confirmation form, Appointment letter and Passport will be checked here. Photograph along with fingerprints and other security checks will be done on Day 1.

Day 2: Embassy Interview

Once you reach inside US embassy you will be given a token number after few security checks. On the announcement of your token number you will be required to go to the interview hall.

On the interview counter line up wait for your turn to come. Once the person ahead of you is done with his/her interview, wait for the consulate signal to call you to the window. Do not rush by yourself before the consulate calls you.

Once you reach the window do not forget the wish the consulate with a smile on your face J

REMEMBER YOUR DURATION / ADDRESS OF STAY, POINT OF CONTACT, AND CONTACT NUMBER OF POINT OF CONTACT.

Below is the brief overview of my interview session with an “African Lady Consulate” which lasted for hardly 2-3 minutes

Consulate: What is the purpose of your visit?
Me: I am working with software MNC (Name) and we are into healthcare domain. We provide services (s/w + h/w) and solutions to various hospitals in United States.

We have started new software applications along with new hardware devices which we are going to implement in various hospitals across US that nurses, hospital administrators will be using in coming time. My purpose of visit is to take the training on h/w configuration set up and to understand the new software project requirements to make sure that it is well functional in hospitals.

Consulate: Duration of the visit
Me: 4 Weeks

Consulate: For how long have you been working with this present company?
Me: Answered

Consulate: What exactly are your roles and responsibilities over there during your visit?
Me: As I said earlier about the new software and hardware set up in my company headquarters in United States, my role will be to make sure that the new software meets the user requirements and to take training on the new hardware devices. Our software applications and hardware set up are well functional across the various hospitals so I need to get training on new set up as it is not really possible to bring the huge hardware device here in India and further I will be sharing all my experience and knowledge with my team mates. As these devices are used by nurses, administrators across various hospitals we need to make sure that they don’t face any kind of problems while using the same.

Also I will be meeting few delegates who would be coming from Australia, Singapore etc to understand the upcoming project requirements and customer needs.

Consulate: Are you single or Married
Me: Single

Consulate: What is your annual Package?
Me: Told her my annual package

Consulate: Whenever your company starts a new software project or a new hardware is it really necessary that someone from here has to go and get the training?
Me: (very confidently) Yes

Consulate: Are you planning to visit any Hospitals also?
Me: Yes. But the Hospital names are not yet disclosed to me by the management and are confidential.

(I was not expecting this question from the consulate but to make sure and convince her that I m not only visiting company headquarters but also hospitals also for a good cause, I had to say YES)

Consulate: She then asked for my finger prints and told that my visa has been approved.

That’s it

Please remember CONFIDENCE is the key to get over the interview. DO NOT FUMBLE. Make sure that your voice is clear and well understandable. Just answer what is asked in a polite manner and do not add up detailed information which the consulate is not even seeking. The key is that you have to convince the consulate that your visit to US is very much important. Keep proper eye contact with the consulate. You should sound and look like a professional. And yes, LUCK does matters here J

I hope this will help you all to some extent. Do let me know if you need any other info.

B1/B2 Visa Interview Experience in New Delhi
Hello Everyone,
I had my B1 visa interview on 29 October 2013, in New Delhi Consulate and my visa got approved. This was the first time i had applied for US visa. Immihelp website had helped me a lot in preparing myself for the interview and hence i believe that I should also post my experience so that it can be useful to someone. Interview timing I had selected was 10:30 am. Usually the interviews last only for about 25-30 seconds but in my case it lasted for about a minute (maybe more). There were instances during the interview where i was pretty much sure that my visa will be rejected. But it was the opposite that happened.
Few words about the interviewers:-
They know you are scared and nervous. And I believe it is good to be scared. The V.O. needs to know only 2 things, are you being completely honest and are you going to comeback to you home country once your work is done. If the answers to the above questions are YES, VO for sure will grant you the visa.
On a nervousness scale of 1 to 10, i was doing 8.

VO: Why are you going to USA.
MEquickly) One of our clients in US has a specific requirement that needs to be incoporated in our existing software so that......
VO: Hey hey hey..!! slow down, you are going too fast, you see, i gotta type too..
ME: Sorry.. started the answer again (fumbled twice during the answer)
VO: How long have you been working in this company
ME: 2 years and 9 months (very important, no using of words like since 200x, around x years, almost been x years. State the EXACT duration)
VO: Hmmm.. And you are an.....
ME: stated my designation
VO: But you just said you are going for client requirement understanding
Me: Yes, in my organization my designation incorporates client dealing too.
VO: Package
ME: x rs
VO: monthly? (with his eyes looking straight down at me)
Me: x rs (very important no using of words like around, almost etc. Say it as, for example, ten thousand two hundred and twenty eight)
VO: I am sorry, 4 weeks is too much for this work (and he took my passport. I thought this is it, he is returning me the passport)
Me: (quickly) Sir, i have two more meetings to attend with 2 of our different clients (named them) and .....
VO: (interrupting me), See, you are suppose to tell me everything, you are not supposed to hide anything, this is an interview.
ME: (thinking all is lost) Sorry sir, but what i stated earlier was the main purpose of this visit to US. if that meeting is over before 4 weeks only then i'll be meeting my other clients, our priority is only and only XYZ comapny. If this meeting consumes the whole 4 weeks of my stay then i'll return to India.
VO: You said XYZ company, right?
ME: That's right sir.
VO: And you are going to California (looking at this computer screen)
ME: Yes
VO: XYZ company , that is your client dear (yes he said the word dear), is in texas not in california.
ME: (I was sure of my result now) Its their head office in Texas, they have a subsidiary in California called ABC ltd. (this is where my preparation helped me)
VO: Started typing something on his computer. When are you planning to leave?
ME: told the date

Then, came the unexpected golden words. I am approving your visa. Have a safe journey

Some points: Look straight into the eye and talk, may whatever happen, may whatever question they ask.
Keep your shoulders broad. Trust me, it will help

B1\B2 Visa experience
Heyy guys, I attended my Visa interview today at Chennai.

For the Biometric test all they ask you is appointment letter, DS-160 confirmation page and of course your passport :).
It gets over within 5 minutes.

For the visa interview, the just ask the normal questions.
e.g.: Purpose of visit, how long are you going to stay, what is you annual package, explain about the product on which which you would be given training, are you married, where are your parents.

Just the normal questions. Be calm and composed and you'll get through it.

B1- Visa
Visa is scheduled for 3rd & 4th Oct'2013 at Mumbai Consulate
The place is new to me, so I started by journey to BKC around 1.30 & have reached around 3.00 PM (one hour early) to the OFC centre...

3rd Oct Experience...

The OFC execute asked to keep my Mobile in the nearby locker managed by 3rd Party. They have charged Rs. 200 so better not to carry Mobile or any other electronic items...

They only checked Passport, Appointment letter & DS160 confirmation letter, if there is any mistake in Name-Surname & DOB, they ask for modification, for this also that 3rd Party would charged Rs. 200...

I entered to the Office around 3.15... and its takes only 10 minutes for all the process...

Learning form the day: Not to carry Mobile, electronic items & any luggage...

4th Oct'2013..

I joined the queue around 9.30 and after following the all the instructions, I reached to the counter for my Visa Interview.

O- Why u want to visit USA
M- Business meeting.

O- When
M- Said (date which u entered while filling application)

O- Tenure
M- 3 Weeks ( Duration which u entered while filling application)

O- Why 3 weeks
M- Explained my schedule

O- Your package
M- Said

O- Designation
M- Said

O-How many peoples you are supervising
M-12

O-Client Name
M-Said

O- Client side supervisor name
M- Said

O- R u married
M- Yes

O-Kids
M- No

O- r u taking you wife with u
M- No, this is business meeting & I don't want to disturb the same in personal stuff

O- Who will take care your wife in your absence
M- My Parents

O- Are they are living with u
M- Yes

Then the golden word comes, " I am approving your visa, have a nice trip to USA"

My personal advice to all...

1. Be confident
2. Read your application document
3. Answer short & straight
4. Look at officer eyes (very important)

I must say that all the executives & officers are very kind & soft spoken at USA embassy...

Lessons from the interview:
) Be transparent. As what I have said, the Consuls are individual who have years of experience and extensive trainings in their chosen field.

2) Be honest. As much as possible don’t lie. If you do so, tendency is you will forget what you have written on the application form and you may blow that chance of getting the visa. Whatever way the Consul will interrogate you, if you are honest with your answers, you will still give the same reply.

3) Be yourself.

4) Relax and be confident with all your answers. Never make unnecessary movements like twirling your hair or worse, biting your nails (as some unconsciously do) or make facial expressions that will distract the Consul.

5) Get as much information needed like the place you want to visit, jot down possible questions the Consul might ask you. If possible, practise in front of a mirror or with a friend.

6) One question, one answer. Don’t give too much information other than what is being asked. Keep the talkative side of you behind for a while as this may get you into trouble than good.

7) Have your presence of mind, stay focused and be attentive to the questions asked.

8) Have an eye contact.

9) Have faith in yourself.

10) Have faith in God.

11) As per my observation, the Consuls really don’t care of your financial status, what they care about is your strong ties to your country or work. That you have the intentions of going back to your country and NOT stay in the US as an illegal alien.

12) Being granted a visa is not because of the mood of the Consul during the interview as how we see it when things went wrong and denied of the opportunity. It is but by how you confidently answer and assures the Consul of your honest intentions as a tourist.
