Documents for L1A
Hi All,

My interview date is scheduled this friday for L1A individual visa.. I am carrying all the photocopies in a folder and original in another folder. Is there any particular order I have to arrange them, so that it will be easy for me to handover to the VO. Also if my I129 is requested, should i handover the entire bundle to them ...

Documents required during stamping
For L1B Blanket, do we need to carry the degree certificate as well?

L1B Blanket approved - Chennai
Before even you appear for the interview, please make yourself aware about the L1B visa category. I'm sure most of the organizations will give a clarity on this to define under which category you'd fit it. L1A or L1B (based on experience level) & Blanket or Individual (based on how an individual presents the thoughts etc) Everything is based on the individual actually, at least to get that clarity of where you stand in this 4 quadrant which is very important. Remember, if you have just 5 years of experience and then planning to compete under L1A blanket, sure shot, it's a rejection!

At least in my org, they put most confident people, who can well articulate the specialization or explain their job role better under the Blanket window. Whereas, people who couldn't explain well, mostly were recommended to go through Individual. No offense to anybody but this is the strategy which has to be played well.

After rounds of internal assessment, I as put under the Blanket window which became very stressful for me to prepare. Note - I had an added stress level because I'm not an Engineering grad nor belong to any IT related educational background but someone who's trying to prove a 'Specialized Knowledge' in front of the VO. I doubted myself a lot but I had that gut feeling that I can knock the VO with my answering or articulating skill. I only BELIEVED myself from day ONE.

So through out, you may question yourself with limiting beliefs that you may carry - it varies case to case. Find some sample thoughts:
- Do not have a specialized degree (I have a Masters in media & arts)
- Less years of experience ( This matters to an extend, for L1A, it matters, but for L1B 4-5 years is good enough)
- I can't speak confident, cannot articulate, explain my job role
- Is my specialization worth enough to convince the VO officer?
- Is my salary mentioned, good enough to prove that I'm specialized?
-What are my chances of rejection? What's the rejection rate? I CANNOT Stand QUESTION.

Through them in a bin. Recycle your brain for APPROVAL.

It is very important to be on the same page as your i129s and other supporting documents that defines your specialization. Work with your employers immigration team or any team that's helping you with this visa process at work. Just memorize the key words, jumble them across and remember so that you won't even skip uttering those keywords during the interview. Very important trick. Remember, it's a mind game. All that the VO is expecting to hear from you is, those SAME words, nothing else.

Work your but*off to come up with questions & answers on how brutally one can assess your skill-sets. This is only possible if you decide to you question your skills at an utterly brutal manner, nobody else can do this to you. I can be so harsh me :) Immihelp has some great questions, pick them up, plot your answers (crisp & less jargon), make multiple answers for a single questions. You never know which one you can remember at that time :)

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare until the DAY arrives. Mirror is your friend. Wake up early if your not an morning person. Break certain patterns in life to prove yourself that how important is this for you and to get through this without a rejection.

Just before the final day, look through only the key questions, ie., specialization, work location, client name, qualification, yrs of experience, salary, duration of stay, etc. By now, you would've gulped, gasped and swallowed all the information that you gathered about your specialization.

Remain positive until you have your visa in hand. This is the most critical thing even if you have the strongest case to prove.

Interview DAY
As the day approached, I went to for the BIOmetrics session, which I'm not going to explain because the experience is pretty much the same for everyone. So skipping that.

Consulate Entrance
My spouse dropped at the entrance, leaving me all alone for a big moment that waits ahead of me :) Very thrilled I was but very anxious at the same time. Went through all the security check-ins, queues, payment counter (for L1b Blanket it's applicable), finally put in a queue that marches slowly towards the VO counters. I was asked to go the counter 27. Just before me a guy US return was taking is sweet time to convince this VO but finally left making me wait for more. I was just waiting to get done with this. Seriously.

I approached the VO as my time came. I prepared myself to be very casual and not display my fear, anxiety, nervousness, doubtfulness. I buried everything under my belly. JUST PRETEND CASUAL that your cool enough to handle this moment. Just remember to carry a good smile on you. Smile comes to be naturally but this is really important to show if your really a happy person :) Just a dress that your most comfortable in, no big show offs in front of the guy who's waiting to redefine you fate :) I wore a white that I always feel more comfortable, confident and lucky :) This wins me most of the time.

Time was so close to 11.50am or 12pm, I wasn't sure of the time. As i greeted him, I built a quick rapport by asking him, 'are we past 12?'. He said, oh yeah it's 12. We're good. The ice broke here. I didn't feel him like a stranger nor he wasfeeling different with me. (Small tricks you know)

He asked for all my docs, you know what it is. He barely made an eye contact with me, but mostly looking into the computer.

So here goes the list of questions that he asked, for anybody who wants to what I was really asked!!!

VO: Which company do you work for?

Interviewee: Some Gaint name

VO: What's your client name?

Interviewee: Some client

VO: Which place are you traveling to?

Interviewee: Somewhere in the US

VO: What's your specialization?

Interviewee: I have a specialization in _____ and ______ that I ______ and ______ which integrates ABC with XYZ. My client has PQR requirement for which I'll be customizing this tool, which provides my client this unique benefit / feature.

(Do you see the drift here, the keywords used to knock that guy in front of you? Have the necessary information in place. No big jargon's used, simplified to it's best.

Stress on your specialization - What can you do - built, develop, customize
What the tool does - integrates, merges, creates a new feature
Client requirement - What the client will achieve

Simple assimilation of the 3 key concepts put as a story. That's it, your done.

VO: What's the name of the custom tool that you developed?

Interviewee: Some Name

VO: What's your US salary?

Interviewee: YYYY USD

VO: How long is this project planned for?

Interviewee: 2 years

Finally VO told me, my visa is approved. He stamped first and then told me it's approved. I was already having a feeling before he stamped that he's going to approve this because he never felt or at least behaved that my case was false. (Learn from body language). I was confidently waiting for him to utter those GOLDEN WORDS :)

That's it everyone. I had a very pleasant visa interview moment, all that helped me is my on effort - this is the journey I drafted, reading up a lot - IMMIHELP, your organization and at the end, your positivity. Never even think of rejection, think only how you can convince the VO at your best possible level. You'll be majorly saved.

All the best to everyone who are preparing to appear.

For all the HATERS, if any who think this is a LONG rant, I really want to help people and make them aware how to prepare for this. By not building a strong case with industrial jargon's, instead play well with the human mind. It's easier to win this way :)

Wishes From
Stranger

Applying L1B Blanket visa for second time
I had attended L1B Blanket visa interview, sometime in December 2013. But my visa was not granted and denied with the reason "Not clearly Approvable". This year again iam going to apply with a fresh L1B Blanket application.
My question is "Does the previous L1B Visa rejection/denial has negative impact or impression on my current L1B application/interview?" Iam scared that the chances of my L1B Visa approval may be less due to history of L1B denial.

L1B Visa Approved - 1st June, Chennai
Reading these experiences have been very beneficial to me, hence adding my inputs for other users.

I had my OFC on 31st May and interview on 1st June 10 30 am. I am not going into the drill, since that is fairly well outlined in various posts in this thread.
Input 1 - Please have plenty of time on hand before you leave for both appointments. I had company cabs on both days, but my cab had a puncture on the interview date, and I had to take an auto. So you never know! :-)
Input 2 - Please check the dollar conversion rate on the ustraveldocs site before the appointment. They give the conversion rate valid for appointments till a particular date. Simple way of ensuring the L1B DD is enough and you do not need to pay extra.

I am in Human Resources, so had to prepare exhaustively on the specialization part. Was interviewed by a ~35 year old man in counter 24. Questions asked -
1. Type of visa?
2. How many years worked with present company?
3. Highest qualification?
4. Overseas project details and related specialization?
5. Married?
6. Where is your wife?
7. Do you have kids? How many?
8. is your kid in the US? Is your kid a US national ? (Since my wife is on a H1B)
9. US Salary?
10. Which city are you going to?

He approved it and asked me to collect the stamped I129s and I797 papers along with the passport since there was some system issue. The entire conversation lasted for about 2 minutes.

Input 1: Gauge the type of VO - some like to engage in light conversations, some like to keep it pretty straight and to the point - and accordingly, control the flow of the conversation.
Input 2: Replies need to be concise, precise, simple and confident. You do not need to use jargons to show your specialization. Remember, these guys are smart, any put on show and they can see through!
Input 3: It is more of an elimination process, and not a selection one, so it is easier to get selected than to get rejected.

All the best folks!

L1A (Blanket) along with Spouse and Child (L2) Approved 31st May-Chennai
Thank you all for wonderful experiences shared in forum which helped me very much. Everybody experience might have helped...but I would specially thank person who shared visa mantra and about spreading joy on getting visa approved...who knows what actually may have worked. For any results just thank God , that is what I believe.

Now coming to my experience for L1A visa:

I had both Biometrics and PA on 31st May@ 8.30 And 10.30 am respectively. I had applied along with Family. ( Thanks to this forum which suggested this...it actually favours having family together...apart from being allowed preference in some lines...family will help penultimate day which will help in reducing stress...and make time which moves slowly to pass). Having both at same day is in a way better as you will not have to kill time which runs slowly. It will be over soon ...this is my personal opinion. It can also be tiring and stressful as I observed. For me it started from 8 am and ended at 12 pm for entire process through numerous lines in hit and humid climate. Also plan to have breakfast just enough so you have energy and not too full else in heat you will not feel well.

My background : 10.5 yrs total experience in same top Indian IT company in area of SAP .3.5 yrs as project manager for Same client and current client and to be client in US. Client is a fortune company. I am double graduate and having highest degree as CA. Already having b1/b2. With one tourist travel and one business travel ( for same client). Salary in US 73K USD. Designation in company not containing any term like manager director, senior etc. My proposed role Project Manager.

Experience of OFC is same as others ...just one point take your child's photo in us format.

Coming to PA. Below is my conversation: (Window 27- Young American in his 30-35 with Specs clean shaved. To the point person no talk here and there.)

Me: Good Morning.How r u? (@11.45 am)
VO: Good Morning ...Papers
Me: Handed over papers ( Silence )
VO: Which Visa ?
Me: L1A Blanket
( In between suddenly my 4 yr old champ spoke to VO good morning suddenly very sweetly and no reaction from VO , even I was surprised with my child's act)
VO: Will client?
Me: Answered
VO: Which place?
Me: Answered
VO: what is your highest qualification?
Me: Chartered Accountant
VO: how many workers you will be handling?
Me: 11 workers at on-site ( I had 20 at offshore ...but I gave on-site only)
VO: will you be working for client location?
Me: I will be working for my Company at client location. ( Very important we are suppose to work for our company and not client.
VO: Got it
VO: Who you will be reporting?
Me: To Mr.Xxx,Program Manager
VO: What is a program?
Me: (Probably this series of answer infused confidence in VO). I was just about to explain and when I started he asked other question what program Mr.xxx looks ...I just started that he looks at ERP program of which I will manage mentioned projects...he asked another question in between which location you will work...I was about to answers he asked other question does your program manager also sits at same place....I replied yes he is in same city, state but at different office ...again In between VO asked...so you will be only one at that place? I replied yes I will be only person for these projects at this place....and before I finish another question from VO what is your highest qualification....I simply replied Chartered Accountant....VO asked ..and yours Mam (to my wife)...She Answered both short form and long form.
VO: what's your salary in Us?
Me: per month
VO: per Annum
Me: 73000 USD ...
VO : Got It

Long pause and during whole time he kept on typing. I and my wife stood in same pose and till 1-2 minutes he kept on typing (me my wife just recited mantra in meantime mentally during whole time)
He then started Stamping papers and I realized visa was approved but just waited for him to say so.Me not showed any reaction at that point. And finally golden words said in neutral tone by VO and gave 2 copies of stamped i-129.

(During WholE interview he kept on typing on screen and no eye contact. And girl before us probably got h1b visa approved...she fumbled initially.)

Me and my wife : Thank you very much.
Me: Have a good day.

We left in neutral reaction and once outside consulate we had happy time.

Now the mantra which I referred:

Simply Google Visa mantra and you will get it. Actually it is mantra for Chilkur Balaji- Andrea Pradesh.

Om Vasatkaaraya NAmAha

I would say chant it as many times as you can in sets of 28. It is just matter of faith. Try it out.

And finally spread joy if you get Visa . I gave double triple charge to my rickshaws, taxiwala, etc. Let them also be happy... spread joy

Thanks ....do let me know if anybody needs help ...my contact ... [email protected].

Chances of Approval
Hi Everyone,

This Forum looks a great platform to me for anyone who needs information regarding US Visa. Thanks everyone for sharing their experiences. I am also looking for some help/information from people here.

I am working in one of the top 3 Indian IT companies currently and my overall experience is 5 years and 4 months in IT sector. All of it is with my current employer.
The management is having a business requirement which is technical in nature in US for which they are going to initiate an L1B Blanket VISA for me.

I am really wanting this to materialize however I feel there are 2 possible factors which will play against me:

1) My overall experience is just above the minimum requirement for L1B VISA
2) I am not certain if my skill set will be considered as a specialized knowledge or not

Can anyone here please let me know the following:

What is an average rate of rejection for L1B Visa? As in, if lets say annually there are 10000 VISA applications, on an average how many are approved?

If I am not working on a proprietary tool or a specialized service will that go against me? If Yes, how can I put my work in such a manner that it helps my chances of VISA approval?

Will having just 5 years and 4 months of experience work against me?

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Akshay Pillai

L1A on Blanket Petition approved in Hong Kong
Hi All,

I really appreciate everyone sharing their experience here. The posts have been super helpful in preparing for interview for L-1A visa on blanket petition. The interview was yesterday and I wanted to share my experience, because:

1) no posts I could find with experience at U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong
2) I am not from Hong Kong, but have lived/worked here for the past year. In other words, I interviewed at a post other than my country of citizenship.
3) my salary of ~65K seems to be lower than most folks posting on this page
4) my three years of experience also lower than most.

So I wanted to encourage those in a similar boat.

Anyway, had an appointment for 8.45am; arrived at 8.15am. First went through an initial screening by a local Hong Kongese officer; I think she was getting trained on the job, because another officer came to help make sure I had the minimum required documents (DS-160, three copies of I-129S and I-797). Then went to another window to get an invoice for the fraud detection fee of $500. Then went to cashier and made payment (the Consulate in Hong Kong normally accepts credit card payments, but today the credit card reader was broken, so the cashier was only accepting cash. So I highly recommend everyone to just take cash.) After that I went to be finger-printed. And lastly to the queue for interview with Visa Officer. There were 3-4 VOs interviewing non-petition based visa applicants (e.g. B1/B2) and one VO interviewing petition based visa applicants. So I went to the latter queue. At last it was my turn and here is our short conversation after greetings:

VO: What company do you work for now and what do you do:
Me: Project Manager at ZZZ. My role is ZZZ

VO: Haven't heard of this company. What does they do?
Me: Our company YYYY

VO: And where will you be going to in the U.S.? and what will your role be there?
Me: ZZZ

VO: What is your salary?
Me: ZZZ

VO: And you manage a team of people, right?
Me: Right, no direct reports, but currently managing a team of 6-8 people.

VO: And that will be the case in the U.S. also?
Me: Yes.

VO: Let me go get my stamp.
Me: OK.

VO: Visa approved. Your passport will be available in a week.

DONE!!!

The interview was much briefer than I expected (I had prepared a questionnaire for myself as many suggested on this forum). The preparation definitely helped me to be in the right mind-set. The VO did not look at my company's supporting letter, attorney's supporting letter, or all the other supporting docs I brought along.

Best wishes to you all!

L1A questions on Team size and compensation
Hi All,

Thank you immihelp for putting all the information together. I found this forum an ideal platform to prepare for the L1 visas and I have some queries pertaining to the basic questions the VOs are asking to the L1A candidates:

1. Will you have people in the USA reporting to you? (How many direct/indirect should be ideal to show)? If I have only 2 or 3 DRs in USA, do I still have a chance to qualify for L1A?

2. Salary in the USA? (what is the minimum salary range to make sure it doesn't hamper the case for L1A).

3. Can we still have direct and indirect reports in the foreign country after we intend to move to the USA on L1A.

Thanks in advance!!!
