L1B Blanket got approved
First of all, many thanks to all of them who shared there experiences here. I would like to keep it really short. My understanding is VO's are there with a clear purpose and so should we be while going for visa interview. Rest all depends on your luck. Be natural and be confident, body language plays a very important role,go well prepared and be very very clear on your specilaized knowledge thing becoz thats what on which L1B blanket visa depends, have a clear understanding of your role in US. Rest all is on your luck :)

I had my interview on 17th 8:45 AM slot, and got my L1-B approved.

Here's how it went -

I was waiting first in line, waiting for my turn. The VO i went to, had just rejected the person before me. When he called me, i just didnt think of anything and went to the counter

At the same time, someone came and called him for something ... he went out and was speaking to someone.

He came back and apologized for the delay, and started looking at my docs.
After quick glance through it,

VO : How long have you been working with your current company ?
Me : 4 yrs, 3 months
VO : Do you have a client..if yes, who is it ?
Me : Yes, My client is XYZ
VO : How long are you working for this client ?
Me : 4 yrs, 3 months. I have been working for XYZ since i joined.
VO : So what is it that you are going to develop.. what exactly are you going to do in US ?
Me : Told about my project, then highlighted my roles and responsibilities

By this time, VO had already started tapping into the computer, verified the passport, signed on the forms, punched stamps..
This was a little tensed moments for me, as he was not speaking anything

Then he put the passport and one copy of the petition docs in a folder, and dropped it in a basket behind him
[When he did this, I was relieved as i knew this means my visa was approved]
Then he gave me the other 2 copies of the petition.

VO : One copy is for you and other for your employer. Enjoy your stay in US.

Me : Thank you, have a nice day!

My suggestions and observations -

1. Ensure that you have worked for sufficient time with your client. This is good enough proof that you must have gained specialized knowledge.

2. Please reach well before time, 30-40 mins before your appointment, it REALLY helps... as you do not have to wait long (trust me, it will save you the mental tension of having to hear rejections of others!)

3. Answer only to WHAT IS ASKED TO YOU. Don't vomit stuff about project, proprietary tools, specialized knowledge, etc .. if VO didnt ask for it.

4. Dont sound desperate, dont sound in a hurry, dont look anxious/tensed. Be confident.

Best of luck to all those who are reading this and going to attend interviews soon !

And thanks a lot to this forum, it really helps to boost confidence.

L1B got Approved.....
Hi All,

I would like to thank this Forum for helping me to get a feel of what we can expect in the VISA Interview.

I had my L1 B Interview on 14th Dec morning slot in Chennai Consulate. I would suggest everyone to be come exactly 30 min early to the slot, so that you can avoid standing in the long Queue. Do take umbrella if you are goin to visa interview in Chennai as its raining intermittently.

1st we have to give our interview Letter along with Passport and Bank Receipt to the counter then they will seal it and return to us.

Next you will be checked by security person then allowed inside the US Consulate ,where all the documents and files will be scanned.

Then you will be entering the waiting Lobby, Pre screening of all the documents(DS 156, DS157 & DSI29S forms), Photo( Please use recent photo in Application) are verified and Finger Prints are scanned here(This takes approx 30min).

I went attend the Personal interview in the 1st building without making the visa payment. So, I was asked to make the Visa fee payment in the 2nd building by VO located next to Photo Shop inside the 1st building. I made the payment and came back to the 1st building again to attend the interview with the Same VO, She is a cool and friendly lady VO who was happily approving all the application by not taking more than 2-3 mins.

My turn comes i was bit tensed while goin for the interview, VO's are very friendly and they are here to help you to get your visa's.

Following are the questions she asked me during the interview

1) For which client you are going to work?
2) What's your roles and responsibilities?
3) Asked to keep my Left Index Finger in the scanner?
4) Have you travelled to US before?
5) How Along you are with this Client?

Then came the golden words. Your Visa is Approved. You will get your passport in a weeks time. All the Best.

Don't forget to get the following from the VO

 a) Two I129S forms, one for employer and one for us
 b) Customer copy of the visa receipt.

So it purely depends on your luck.So only thing you can do is u have to impress the VO in the short time. So go in Complete Formals (Light shirts and Dark Pants will do the trick). Always speak with a smile and then make sure you give your answers in one sentence & to the point. Dont use any technical words as they are not techies!!

If you use any technical words, then they might suspect you lieing and will starting drilling you more into the technical aspect. Make sure you have answers for all the questions that are posted in this website.. All the very best

Be cool and confident
For all the guys who are yet to get an experience;

be prepared for all the questions that are posted on this website ( use short sentences)

make sure that you use very simple language while answering questions

don't bother even if you are cross questioned on something as it is just to make sure that you are 100% sure of what you are telling.

make sure that you present some specialized skill( whether you have it or not doesn't matter) otherwise there is a chance for rejection for the reason that you are not a specialized knowledge person

Good site for info
I have gone through this site for the past 4 weeks and my interview is on 10th Dec for L1B. The info was really helpful while moving in the US Consulate.

Questions are pretty much same, so I am not gonna repeat them.

Few points to keep in mind which fetches you your Visa.

1. Confidence. Maintain eye contact while discussing.
2. Appearance. 100% formals with a tie.
3. Communication. Officers do not know anything about technology. So explain everything clear and loud. Dont use the technical terms that you use in your project.

All the best. May all the luck in the world be on you side.

PS: I had the common question, "What are you going to do there?". My answer did not contain the words like proprietary tools, specialized tools and not even mentioned the tool names. I explained them in layman terms about my job.

I had my visa PA on Dec 12,2009 at 11:15. I was there before 45 mins and completed my screening, and moved to another for paying my fees and the interview was also taking place there. Its kind of a very different situation where you can see children crying on oneside, some kids playing and some rejections going on. Believe me it very hard but you should never show your tension and be very confident. If your able to overcome that then the visa is yours.
When I was there the television was out of order so was only seeing various expressions of the people. There were only 2 counters fr L, H and student visas. There was one counter were a lady was exclusively there to reject visas. She never approved any L1 or H1 she had approved one dependant visa alone out of 20 people who appeared in front of her.

There is a notion that Technical Writer cannot go to US and visas will be rejected. One thing you need to understand Technical Writing is also a specialized skill, you can also qualify to get a H1B. This facts remains as a "notion". I had no tools in my PRD, no technology, just business processes and methodologies. Fram a scenario in your mind on how your going to present to the VO.

I was lucky that I did not get to that lady. I went to counter4 and a young gentleman was interviewing. He was typically dressed like an Indian.

Me: Good Morning How are you doing?
VO: I am fine thanks , how is it going so far?
Me: Going gr8. so far so good.
Vo: Who is you client?
Me: ZZZYYYY
VO: What is company doing for XXYYY?
Me: They are into a integration program and moving multiple systems into one platform (asper PRD)
VO: Good. I approve your visa. Have a nice day. Your visa will reach you in a week's time.
Me: Thanks Have a nice day! Merry Christmas!
VO: You too have a nice Xmas time

So there is nothing to get worried. Remember dont use any technical words. They are not techies!
If you use any technical words, they will starting drilling you more into the technical aspect. Answer in one sentence. Answer to the point.

L1 B - Visa got Approved
Hi,
This website is really useful.

I got appointment at 11:30 and i reached the chennai embassy at 10:30. i was allowed inside at 10:30 itself and pre-screening and all went on.

I was waiting in the hall for 20 minutes watching the news channel. This time was very useful in relaxing myself from the nervousness.

I stood in the line and waited for my turn. Kept myself calm and cheerful.
VO asked me only 3 questions
1. Who is ur client
2. How long have you been working for this client
3. Roles and responsibility

and said ur Visa is approved.
Make sure you are confident on the answers for the questions. There are no new questions asked (everyting is mentioned in this website.)

if you have answer for the questions available in the website and answer it confidently with a smile on your face , be sure u have your visa in your hand.

all the best.
