I am a postdoc in the US in J1 category and my husband is in H1B. I recently applied for a tourist visa for my parents and would like to share the experience. This forum was a great help to prepare the right answers for all questions. Although my dad is well versed in English, we opted for the tamil interview to avoid more questions and just in case they do not follow the accent.
VO: Why do you want to go to the USA?
Dad: To visit my daughter and spend some time with her.
VO: How long would you like to go?
Dad: 4 months.
VO: Where does you daughter work?
Dad: In YYYY university as postdoc.
VO: Is she married?
Dad: Yes she is since Feb 2016.
VO: What do you do?
Dad: I am a horticulturist and have fruit plantations. I also have some rental buildings.
VO: Madam, what about you?
Mom: I am a housewife but have some lands in my name and get an income out of it.
VO: How much do you get?
Mom: Around 25K per month
VO: Who is sponsoring your visit?
Dad: My daughter is taking care of everything.
VO: How many children do you have?
Dad: I have a daughter in the US and my son is working as business analyst in Chennai.
VO: You have your visa approved. Have a safe journey.
I prepared them for the same questions following this link
http://www. **** *.com/visitor-visa-guide/visitor-visa-interview-questions
I almost did this everyday for a week until they were very confident.
The VO spoke in clear tamil and she seemed to be an anglo-Indian lady and was very polite.
Following are the list of documents they took for the interview:
1) Passports
2) DS-160 payment proof
3)My letter of invitation
4)My pay-slips for past 6 months
5) Employment verification (mine in the US)
6)Property documents
7)Bank passbooks
8)Group photo of my family and one from the wedding. (Just in case)
9)My brother's IT returns to prove that they have a son in India.
But the VO did not ask for any document proof. Goodluck with your preparation for the visa :) I am ecstatic that I will have my parents here for the summer.
