Unable to Keep Appointment
If you are unable to keep your visa appointment, you must notify the U.S. Embassy/Consulate, stating the details of your case and requesting for a new appointment date for you.

Keep in mind that you will experience a lengthy delay before another appointment can be granted. If your priority date retrogresses in a next month, you will have to wait until it becomes current again.

VFS Process for Immigrant Visa
- Arrange the documents in the following order:
- Interview appointment letter
- Original Passport
Passport must be valid at least eight months beyond the issuance date of the visa. A photocopy of the biographic pages of your passport must be submitted to the VFS office. You will need to carry the original passport with you on the day of interview. - Photo
- Biographic Data Form (Form DS-230)
- For applicants below 14 years appearing for an interview without parents, notarized letter from both parents and legal guardian's photo identification.
- Birth Certificate
- Marriage Certificate
- Termination of Previous Marriage
- Proof of relationship
- Police Clearance Reports
- Deportation Documentation
- Prison Records
- Military Records
- Affidavit of support and its supporting documents, if not already sent to NVC
- Medical examination report (sealed envelope)
- Fees, only if not already paid at NVC
- Following to join applicant documents, if applicable
- Photocopy of valid U.S. visa, if applicable
- Any category specific documents, not already listed above

Immigrant visa interview documents
Affidavit of support
For any of the above documents that have already been submitted to the NVC, you should submit a photocopy for that document. You should submit the original documents for those that are not already submitted to NVC.
It is not clear why you would need to submit the photocopy of the document for which the original and the photocopy have already been submitted to the NVC and NVC is supposed to be sending those documents to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate. It is also not clear why any of the documents need to be submitted to VFS and why VFS would need to check them for completeness when NVC is already doing that.
- Visit the appropriate
VFS center in your region.
If there is more than one applicant in a family (has dependents), one of them can go to the VFS office.
Interview at the U.S. Embassy, New Delhi - Any of the VFS centers in Northern India
Interview at the U.S. Consulate, Mumbai - Any of the appropriate VFS centers in Western, Southern or Eastern India, depending upon the residence
- Submit the documents relevant to your case to VFS, as specified in the "Appointment Package" or "Packet 4".
VFS staff will review your documents for completeness. You will be issued a receipt that lists all the documents you submit. They will also affix a barcode on your passport.
VFS does not accept Wedding Albums. Please carry the same along with you at the time of your interview.
You must submit the documents within the time window specified below, which is different for each consular (or VFS center) region. Failure to submit documents to VFS prior to your interview by the deadline, as specified below, may result in loss of interview date.
Northern India
VFS Jalandhar or Chandigarh- Until 5 working days prior to the date of your interview.
VFS New Delhi - Until 3 working days prior to the date of your interview (including the date of submission at VFS).
Between 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays
Southern India
No earlier than 10 working days, no later than 4 working days.
Between 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays
Western India
No earlier than 10 working days, no later than 4 working days.
Between 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays
Eastern India
At least 7 working days in advance.
Between 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays
- Pay the VFS logistic fee in cash at the VFS application center.
The fee is Rs. 387/- (inclusive of Service Tax @ 10% and Education Cess Tax @0.30%) per applicant.
You will be issued a receipt for the same.
- Report to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate on the day and time your interview is scheduled.
You will need to bring the following documents to the interview:- Original passport
- VFS logistic fee payment receipt
- VFS acknowledgement receipt for the submission of your documents

- If your immigrant visa is approved, your passport, the original documents submitted and the immigrant visa envelope
will be couriered to you within seven business days at your residence address as mentioned on the Form DS-230.

Alternatively, you can also collect your passport across the counter (Counter Passport Collection) from the VFS application center (only in the same city where your interview occurred) on the day of your interview.
