Can you travel to USA with an approved L1A visa but for a week
This is a question from a friend of mine.

She works and lives in UK currently and has an approved L1A visa. Her assignment in USA suddenly went on hold so she is not traveling to USA as previously planned at this moment.

She has family in USA and she plans to attend a wedding. Can she come to Usa using her L1A for a week for this personal reason? Will there be any issues at port of entry?

Thanks

This forum was super helpful for me, so I have put in all the details of my experience as much as I remember. Although this did timeout on me. So, I had to type it all up again
All for you guys :)

OFC location: Hyderabad (There is no advantage doing OFC in chennai)
Interview location: US Consulate, Chennai
Date: 3rd Feb, 2017

About me:
Working for a US based MNC for more than 5 years. Unmarried.

If you don't stay in Chennai, then just book a hotel walking distance from the consulate. It will make your life so much easier.
I booked a room in the Spring Hotel. It is not such a great hotel, they do have free WiFi and terrible complimentary breakfast :)

Also, lots of people in Chennai speak english. So communicating with people shouldn't be a big problem.

Day of the interview:

I only took my documents and my wallet with me (inside with some cash, id cards and hotel key card). Everything else was left at the hotel.

What I wore: Plain blue shirt, black jeans, black formal shoes

So, I arrived at the consulate. At the entrace, they ask a 100 times whether you have any electronics and all. So, leave all that at home.

Inside they screen you and all your belongings.

Another door leads to a guy at a table (which says "Blanket"). He gave a laminated paper which had some instructions about all the documents to take out and arrange and asked me to wait near the chairs.

So these are the documents you will need:
- DS 160
- 3 sets of I 129S
- 3 sets of I 797 (only first page)
- DD if required (write your name and passport number behind it)
- Passport

I took out all the above and waited for him to call me.

He checked all the documents and made 3 for the I129S and I797, folded it and everything. And finally asked me to proceed forward.
After this point, don't touch the folded forms again. Just leave it as it is and hand it over to the different counters based on what they ask.

Proceeded to the main building (where all the action happens)

A lady checked all the documents and ask me to join the line (around 10 people before me)

Counter 1:
Gave all the docuemnts.
Lady at the counter took the DD, and printed recipts and stapled it to the DS160.

Counter 2:
Gave the passport.
Man at the counter checked some details in his computer.

Counter 3:
Gave the passport again.
Placed my hand on the scanner.

Next, I join the line for the interview.
There are around 15 people before me. And I think there are around 5-6 interview counters. So, it is going at a pretty decent pace.

At this point I can hear what some of the VOs are saying and I felt it was best to just tune it out.
Finally I reach the head of the queue and a lady asks me to go to the far right counter (forgot the number).

A lady with her kid was there before me. And the VO seemed in a very good mood. He was also saying hello to the kid and all that.
She leaves and I step forward.

VO: Good morning sir
Me: Good morning sir

VO: Pass me your documents sir
Me: Gave the 3 sets of I797, I129S, the DS160, passport etc.

VO: So, you work for X?
Me: Yes

VO: How long have you worked there?
Me: More than 5 years now.

VO: Are you going to work for a client?
Me: No, I will be working for my parent company at the HQ.

VO: What will be your salary?
Me: XYZ
VO: Did you XYY?
Me: No, XYZ (said in digits)
VO: Ah, okay.

VO: What is your proposed designation?
Me: PQR

VO: What is your specalised knowledge?
Me: I work ABC product of X(my company). My specialization is on A and B components of it. Our product ABC uses X's processors P and Q. And I developed various features for our product on these components. I also review other people's code who work on this product line.
(VO keeps nodding.. I did stumble over some words.. and he seemed pretty convinced by the end of it)

VO starts typing on the computer for around 2 minutes and occasionally refers the I129S.

VO: Ok sir, I am approving your visa (at the same time stamping the I129S's)
Me: Thank you sir

VO: Take these two copies (gave back 2 sets of the I129S+I797) and give one to your HR and one for your port of entry. For subsequent visits, you can use a copy and also for any dependents on L2.
Me: Ok. Have a great day sir!
VO: You too sir.

And thats it. I went straight through the exit.

Left the hotel at : 10.15 am (appointment time was 10.30 am)
Reached back at the hotel at : 11.35 am

Blanket L1 visa approved
Hi All,

The suggestions here have helped me at different steps. Here is my interview experience that took place today:

First off, for Blanket L1 they just asked for the first page of I-797 & eight pages of I-129S(in triplicates) and nothing else. After giving the DD, I then proceeded to the main queue where the interviews were happening.

The candidate in front of me got rejected(had some 8 years of experience vs 1.5y of mine). This made me nervous, but proceeded by keeping cool.

VO: Good Morning.
Me: Good Morning.

VO: You applied for Blanket L Visa?
Me: Yes.

VO: You will work for XYZ company in PQR location?
Me: Yes.

VO: How much is your salary abroad?
Me: ABC $

VO: How long did you work here?
Me: (Initially mistook for the duration of my stay in US, but corrected it later)1.5 yrs

VO: So what specialized knowledge you gained over here?
Me: (I'm really prepared for this question and was answering for around a minute, until I was interrupted by the VO).

VO: So the tool that manages deployment configurations(inferred from my above answer) is being used in which all products?
Me: Well, its being used pretty much everywhere since we follow a service oriented architecture.

VO: (After a long minute of typing) You can relax now. Your visa is approved. I'm doing some typing, so just give me a minute.
Me: Thanks.

Put the "APPROVED" stamp on two of the copies and asked to give one to HR and the other one to show at Port of Entry.

My Tips:
* All they look for is the candidate's body language while answering the question.(And of course, how accurate the answer is as per their knowledge). Hence, be confident at what you say.
* Make sure you don't stutter while telling. This gives an impression that the candidate is trying to hide something.
* Make sure you request him to ask the question again, in case you didn't here it the first time.
