The whole process took 35 days in my case because rush is at its peak during June-July.
I would suggest you to not to panic if you have more than a month to your date of joining.
If you have less time, I would suggest you to keep emailing embassy continuously and request them to process you application early.

I have already completed 4 years of my PhD. I was reapplying for the F1 visa which involves going through the whole process again. I had received the 221G in 2012 as well when I was beginning my PhD, which ay have lead to them reimposing 221g on me. I submitted the documents requested on the 12th of June by email, but did not receive any confirmation of receipt of documents, so I contacted the service center for help. I resent my documents to the service center and my case was updated on the 16th of June.

I had my visa interview on 22nd June, 2016, and was handed a green form - 221(g) by the officer asking for additional documents to be sent to the embassy via email. I sent all the required documents the same evening, and received an automated response of receipt within a few hours. However, the next day I received an email from [email protected] stating that I need to compile all the information in one word document and resend the documents. I resent the documents as per the instructions on the evening of 23rd June, 2016; however, I have not received an automated response of receipt from them as yet. Thankfully, I did some online search and got to know about others who have had similar experiences - they had posted their experiences on the immihelp forum, and many of them stated that they contacted the US Travel Docs for this issue. I did the same, and they asked me to forward all the documents to them. I did that, and received prompt responses from them regarding the receipt.

on 7/8 received my passport with white slip 221 g. They are asking me to appear for an interview and bring following document and then says "FP". not sure what FP is . I have sent an email to ustraveldocs and waiting for their reply.

Came toronto for L1 renewal, interviewed on 3 May, and received 221g yellow slip, I was told my L1 blanket was approved but my visa needs additional review which may take 3-4 weeks... asking for CV and sent on the same day. Till now, no update and still waiting. Called once and emailed twice, same template response saying my case was pending, and they'll contact me once completed.
I've been working in US in my company for 3 years and been to US for 3 times without expeirence of being checked. Hope can end this asap.
Called on June 15th and was offered to pick up passport at embassay, everything went smoothly, got passport at 3pm and returned to US on 16th.
