To give a background, I run a Digital Marketing Company in Mumbai and wish to attend a Digital Marketing Conference in New York, a month from now. I had Conference Registration papers and Flight booking details but wasn't asked for any documents.
Had applied for a B1/B2 6 months back but it was disapproved under 214 (b), that time I was applying with my child, only
two of us. Also had another rejection for B1 7.5 years back, when I was in my first job. I was asked details of both of these.
This time, today, in March 2015 was a fresh application for B1/B2 again for attending 3 day conference and 3 day tourism in New York, just by myself.
After the regular fingerprinting and queuing up for the interview scheduled at 10 am, the lines moved fast, and following were the questions posed by my VO. I would say, it was a long interview for a B1/ B2 as compared to the ones I read earlier in this forum.
Greeting each other..
Why do you want to go to the US.
What is the conference about.
What does your company do.
Is it a partnership with your husband.
Is it a family business.
Are you single or married.
You had applied in last september also, was that for the same conference.
Are your husband and child traveling with you.
Tell me more about the conference and how is it going to help you.
Do you have any friends or relatives in the US. No
Are you sure you dont have any friends also? I have friends but I'm out of touch with them. I named two, one in California and one in New York.
What does your friend in New York do.
You had applied in 2007 too.
I answered all questions honestly, as was the case for each one of these.
And then came the final words, I had been waiting for, my heart was pounding initially when I was answering.
"Your visa is approved."
I was delighted and thanked the VO. My passport has to be collected in 2-3 days, he informed.
I guess being truthful, confident, positive is the key. Having honest answers for all questions works, in my opinion.
Initially i was very nervous but after going through lot of information online, I was well prepared
I had interview on 26 Feb 2015

Granting of Visa and interview is all about the way you represent them.
I cleared my Visa interview on 02/03/2015. There are a lot of experiences here, I will just put in bulleted points about the basic stuff which is surely needed.
DS 160-
-- Your application has to be absolutely specific and truthful. Most of the decisions are made based on the application itself. All applications run through some sort of identity and risk modeller.
-- Always provide specific travel plans in your app. Preferably, have even the blocked(not booked) flight ticket details on your application.
-- Be very clear in your role description in your current and previous jobs. Any vague description there, only leads to doubts.
-- Don't provide ambiguous income or job details.
OFC appointment-
-- Very comfortable, reach early, sometimes you can walk in way before your scheduled appointment and come out early.
-- Carry only passport, DS 160, Appointment confirmation. No other document needed.
-- Do not carry mobile phone or any other electronic item, even accidentally.
-- The person attending to you at the OFC counter for biometrics may ask you questions on your purpose of visit. Don't be taken aback by that and answer confidently. These guys do not decide your fate, no need for nervousness here.
Consulate appointment-
--They start taking people in people 45 minutes before the appointment. Once you have cleared the security check, you are made to sit in a partially covered sitting area, and you move along the sitting benches as people start moving in.
-- Once you are in the second building, you stand in another Q, to get your finger prints re-verified.
-- Once this is done, you will have to wait in one more Q and wait for an agent to guide you to the appropriate counter. Although people advice against it, but try and listen in to other interviews, it gives a fair idea of what to expect.
-- Please bring all the documents you think will strengthen your case, like invite, confirmation letter, ITR, bank stmts, any property ownership etc. You may or may not be asked for it.
Actual interview experience:
VO : "Can I have your passport please."
Me: "Good Morning Ma'am"(while handing over the passport). No reply from VO.
VO : "So, why do you wanna travel to US?"
Me: "To attend technical training and business meeting to discuss the launch of our product in India."
VO: (Was inaudible, speaking away from the mike).
Me: I can't hear you.
VO : "What's the product?"
Me: (Explained in a sentence).
VO : "How long will you be there?"
Me : 2 weeks.
VO : "Your Visa is approved, have a safe trip."
Me : "Thank you"
I got my visa on 03/03 itself.
Some Insight : I am a single, <30 years old, software engineer. My sister is already in US on a non-immigrant visa. Yet I got the Visa. There are no fixed patterns to any Visa rejection, go with a positive mindset and carefully drafted application.
All the best to everyone. This forum has been very helpful to me, and I would be glad to help out people too.
I had the biometrics sessions at 13:30 on 01 Mar, reached by 13:00.
Boards will be kept stating time, stand in appropriate queue. Once in, it was done in 10 mins.
I had the consulate interview at 09:30 on 02 Mar, reached by 0900, long queue – no boards, common line.
At one place you will find queue is not moving – there is a stall for people to place bags and other material not allowed inside.
If you do not require such service, please move on.
Once in, visited one counter for biometric check, followed by another counter for interview. I was out by 10:00.
Only one question asked by visa officer : “can I have your passport” … after a few clicks on his system, he said “your visa is approved” :)
Remember - no bags, phone, USB tokens
Keep passport, appointment letter and DS 160 handy when nearing end of queue and at counters
