Thanks all for sharing their experiences. It helped us a lot for the preparation of Visa interview. To return the favor, here I’m writing our experience.
My husband’s company had applied for H1B visa for him and H4 for me and my son (8 months at the time of Visa interview). His application was through lottery and he had opted for Visa interview (stamping interview) at Mumbai consulate.
We prepared a detailed list of documents needed for the interview and gathered all the documents. This gives a peace of mind on THE day!
Our OFC appointment was scheduled at 4:30PM on 17th Aug and Visa interview was scheduled at 8:30 AM 19th Aug.
Note: We did not take our son with us for the interview, as its not mandatory for under 14 years kids to be present for the interview. We took his photos with us.
OFC
Date: 17th August 2014
Time: 4:30 pm
OFC Center: BKC, Mumbai
Fingerprinting and photo process at OFC is very smooth and the actual process takes only 5 mins. We reached the OFC center in BKC, Mumbai at 3:30 PM. There was already a queue - but a small one. We joined the queue and kept the documents ready
1. 3 passports
2. 3 DS 160 confirmation letters
3. 1 Appointment confirmation Letter
Staff at both OFC and Visa interview center are friendly. Ask your doubts to them and they should guide you correctly.
When we entered into the building, staff checked our appointment letters, and put corresponding stickers behind our passports. That sticker had 1. Name 2. Visa type and 3. Appointment confirmation number (note that this appointment confirmation number from DS160 remains the identifier throughout the process).
We went inside. My husband carried his and son’s passport and I took mine. We joined the line where you get the token numbers.
With the token number, we guided to particular window (separate windows for us), where an officer (Indian) took the photograph and fingerprints. He also clicked photo of my son’s photo. He asked couple of questions like 1. When are you travelling 2. How old is your son etc. He then stamped the DS160 forms.
We were out in approx 20 minutes.
Visa interview
Date: 19th August 2014
Time: 8:00 pm
Consulate: US Consulate, BKC Mumbai
We reached the consulate at 7:15 am to join the huge queue - the queue was for 8:30 am inteview! There were other people waiting (for later time schedule) to join the queue.
We kept DS160, passports, appointment confirmation letter and visa application approval leter (I797) ready.
On entering the consulate, we went through a security checking. They do not allow 1. Backpacks 2. any electronic device - laptop, mobile, charger, USB, headset etc. Then we were asked to sit in an open area - it was a big sitting arrangement forming a queue according to visa type.
After waiting in a queue for approx 20 mins, we entered main interview hall. At first counter, they verified our fingerprints and asked us to wait in a line for interview. Staff told us to keep our passports and I-797 ready. We moved to interview counter.
VO(lady Smiling):Good Morning
We: Good Morning
VO: Can I see your passports?
Husband handed over all the passports.
VO: Whos your Employer?
Husband: xxx Corporation
VO: What’s kind of you work?
Husband: I work as Software Engineer and my responsibilities include x, y and z.
VO: How many employees work for your organization?
Husband: Approx 3500
VO(Raising eyebrows): All engineers?
Husband: No, out of 3500, approx 2000 are engineers.
VO: How long are your working with this organization.
Husband: 6 months.
VO: Where did you work before?
Husband: Told the list.
VO(Smiling): You have worked in all the biggies!
VO: What’s your highest qualification?
Husband: xxx which is equivalent to xxx in US.
VO(to me): What’s your highest qualification?
Me: xxx
Then she checked the passports and said
VO: I will come back in a minute.
She took the husband’s passport and went back to a desk. She gave the passport to a lady inside and came back.
VO came back and said
VO(to Husband): Your passport is bit old and I’ve asked to check the quality of it. Its about printing on the passport. Don’t worry, its not your fault (smiling).
After 2 mins, the other lady who had the passport with her came to desk and handed over the passport to VO, they had a small discussion. We were tensed, as we could sense that something was not alright.
VO(to husband) The printing quality of the passport is not good, the passport does not scan properly. You might have a problem when you travel, so I suggest you to get the new passport. Drop the new passport and your dependent’s passports to a VFS office.
She gave us 221(g) white slip, in which VO checked the box against ‘get a new passport’ option and wrote +2 dependents on it. We were not sure if the Visa was approved or not.
We were bit tensed, but had to work on getting a new passport.
My husband applied for reissue of a passport in Tatkal, got the new passport in 4 days and then we submitted the 4 passports (husband’s 2 passports, mine and son’s 1 passport each) to VFS center in Pune. We submitted 221(g) and DS160 along with the passports.
We visited
https://ceac.state.gov/ceacstattracker/status.aspx to check the status of our visa couple of times a day!. It was “Administrative processing” for first 3 days (after submitting the new passport) and changed to “Issued” on 4th day. Our passports were dispatched on 4th day and we picked them up from VFS office on 7th Day.
That was the moment to celebrate!
We did not hear the magical words “Your visa is approved”, but its okay. All’s well that ends well. :)
