H1B stamping experience-Chennai consulate
I had my H1B first-time stamping interview today at the Chennai Consulate.
Interview time : 9 AM.
I was let inside at around 8:45 PM. It is wise not to arrive more than 30 min in advance because they don't let us in early anyway.
A token number was given as soon as I was done with the security check.
Based on this token number, I was told to go to a counter to have my documents bundled up appropriately(mainly the passport + appt letter+ ds-160 confirmation in one bundle and other petition docs such as I-797,I-129, LCA and USCIS support letter in another bundle). The token number and the corresponding counter are displayed on the TV in the room.
Next, I was told to go to another counter to verify my finger prints.
After fingerprint verification, I was told to go to another building for the visa interview. I was called for my interview based on my token number.

Background about my case::
First time H1B stamping. F1 student visa to H1B visa
Currently working in the US in the manufacturing sector. Masters degree from an university in the US.

The interview was very simple and straightforward, conducted by a non-Indian consular officer.

1. So you work for YYYY company?
2. What does YYYY company do?
3. How much do they pay you?

Good luck, everyone.

H1B Renewal - Delhi Dropbox Experience
After going through the process of trying to schedule a visa interview, I determined that I was eligible for the Dropbox facility. Once you get the Dropbox confirmation letter, you'll notice that it is not very clear about what needs to be done so I wanted to share my experience going through the new process.

I was eligible for the Dropbox facility as I was:
1) renewing my H1B which had expired less than 12 months ago
2) same visa category
3) same petitioner (employer)
4) passport was valid for at least the next 6 months

I went to the Stanley office (Offsite collection center or OFC) in New Delhi with my passport, visa, my I-797 petition, Dropbox confirmation letter and visa fee receipt. Not knowing what to expect, I also took a letter from my employer, my salary slips and bank statements. I was ushered in after a quick security check and my passport and docs were given a quick look by folks at the front desk. The lady asked whether the visa renewal is for the same petitioners and visa class fork which I responded yes. Soon after that, I was given a purple token and was asked to take a seat inside.

I waited my turn to be called to an OFC agent who checked my docs and asked me similar questions. I was asked to give my passport and the ORIGINAL I-797 along with the Dropbox confirmation letter and visa fee receipt and the DS-160 barcode page along with one photo. I was a bit apprehensive about giving away my original I-797 since the letter only indicated copies of the original, but nevertheless I complied.

I then asked if other docs were required for which she firmly responded No and added that I could only send ONE additional document of my choosing along with the above. Confused with the answer, I chose to give my employer's letter (on company letterhead) as it made more sense to me. The agent took my docs and told me that I would be informed by mail. All this took roughly about 15-20 mins.

After that, I got the following email from the consulate:

"Dear YYYY

Your document(s) have been collected from the US Embassy/Consulate.

The passport number being returned is YYYY ZZZ

You have chosen to have your documents delivered to the following location:
Delhi, S - 1 American Plaza, NewDelhi, 110019

If you have any issues or concerns, please contact us at www.ustraveldocs.com/in."

Since the email was a bit vague whether the docs are ready to be picked up or not, I called the helpline number and confirmed the same. I went in and picked up my passport and was returned all the documents that I had initially submitted along with it (including the original I-797).

Overall, I think it was a decent experience with the new process and it certainly saved a lot of time for everyone. Hope my account helps someone. Good luck to all!

H1B Visa stamping experience @ Chennai
First of all, Thanks to immihelp. It really gave me so much confidence after going through the experiences in this site and was familiar with all the possible questions.

My OFC interview was scheduled on 31st Dec 2012 @ 10AM -
1. Reached there early by 8.30 AM and was allowed inside the building
2. it was very much straight forward and there was no confusion at all. finished my biometric and photography without much wait and was out of the building by 8.45AM

Most important - 2nd Jan was my Consulate interview, @ 10AM

I was really tensed, what all questions they may ask.

Reached there by 8.20AM and there was long Queue

All i can tell is, it is very well organised and we will not have any confusion with the process. just follow what security person tells and the screens.

i will share the final interview experience. Reached the lobby where we need to wait for final intv around 9 AM and was a long wait till 10.10AM for my round.

i saw my token number against Counter 20 and went to that Queue. Other queues at Counter # 17 / 22, was moving very fast. But the VO at my counter, was taking time with candidates. VO was aged somewhere close to 40, and very good looking.

i was called for the interview finally at 10.15AM

Me - Good mroning
VO did not respond, asked my passport and DS 160 confirmation. Once those were handed over, he greeted me back and asked How are you?
ME - I am doing good, what about you ?
VO - Doing great

5 secs gap

VO - What is your highest qualification
ME- Answered the question
VO - asked how long, i am with my present company ( i was wearing my current company ID tag)
ME - Answered - XX

info - i am a Diploma holder and with 11 years exp

VO - What is the difference between Diploma and a Engineering Degree
ME - it is a 3 years Technical course, compared with 4 years Eng Degre
VO - What is your specializtion into
ME - Computers
VO again asked, how long you are with present company
ME - 4 years

Reason - With Diploma, you need minimum 9 years work exp for H1

Next question from VO - What is your total exp ( as expected)
ME - 11 years
VO -Which company you worked before this
ME - ZZZ
VO - Do you have the experience letter from that company?
ME - yes, started pulling the exp letter out of the file
VO - just asked, i dont want to see it.
VO - What is your designation
ME - Answered
VO - For which Client you will work at US?
ME - answered
VO - Asked about client business
ME - Answered
VO - Whcih city are they located
ME - answered

30 sec's i have to wait, VO was typing something in his computer

and Finally, relief for all my tension - VO told - You Visa is approved and gave me a white document to refer the policies.
