H1B Interview at Mumbai Consulate
I have been to this site just couple of days before my interview and it did provide good information...thank you all and now would like to share my experience as well...

My company arranged for a cab to pick me up at my residence at 4.30 AM and we started at 4.35 AM from Pune, stopped inbetween (@mall) for a quick break of 10 mins and reached Mumbai consulate by 7.30AM...Driver is good and quite experienced but Mumbai traffic is not predictable. Leaving Pune in the morning to reach Mumbai for 9 AM interview would be risky, I was assured both by my company transport desk and cab company that we will be fine and so went with their advice.

Reached consulate around 7.30-7.45 and there was a queue already, asked security if I could join the same queue. There were few who brought their mobile phones but were not allowed inside. Mine was a transperent folder however I have seen quite a few with all types of non-transperent files. people with remote car keys, mobiles,electronic gadgets were asked to leave them somewhere and come back....one person had a USB drive with him...if someone accompanies you then he/she can park the car on the opposite site of the road infront of the consulate but they should be seated there to remove the car if required...there is VFS arranged transport as well butnot sure how it works...there are other posts regarding the same, please refer to them

1st - security check, placed file and all belongings in a tray including wrist watch, someone was asked to remove blazer as well, they were scanned while we passed through the metal detector followed by a check by security person

2nd - made to sit in a waiting area type out door facility with proper shelter and chairs, in the same order we finished security check,no one joins in between or jumps the queue.... everyone has to sit next to the last person waiting there.... washrooms and drinking water available here...Couple of VFS personnel checked passport and interview confirmation letter, initially asked for company letter but later said they dont need that.

3rd - Picked up the file etc., joined the queue and went to a counter who scanned the barcode and attached a sticker with token number on passport.

4th - we were made to wait at another counter where the finger prints were taken, given a small pamphlet which explains our rights in US and then directed to the waiting area....to be seated right infront of the interview counters. You can actually hear all the interviews being done it is a combination of H1,L1,B1 with mixed results.There were more than 15 counter and 2 or 3 tokens were called to one counter, while the perosn in the front goes near to the VO with a glass door seperation rest of them will be waiting back until he/she is finished.

5th - i was sitting right in the first row inbetween two counters and could hear all the interviews done by both the VOs, once is male in late 20s and another VO is female in late 20s as well, the male VO was taking a lot of time for each interview whereas the female VO is not taking more than 2 to 3 minutes for approving the visa..there are variety of visa applicants like L,H,B and there were few rejections (221g) cases as well, i was hoping i should be called to the counter where the femalre VO is present (for a moment i forgot that there are other VOs at other counters as well :-)) however when the token number is displayed I was called to the counter where the male VO is.....i went to the respective counter...

VO: Good Morning
Me: Good Morning

VO: Yes Sir, please show me your passport and why are you going to US
ME:Sure, here is my passport and I am going to US for temporary work assignment

VO: have you applied for H1B visa before
ME:xxxxx

(here I did apply for H1b in 2005 and was given 221g slip however didnt pursue it further since I got a good offer from a company in India) I explained the same to VO.

VO:asked for the employer who filed my first petition in 2005
ME:xxxxx

VO:Who is your employer now.
ME:xxx

VO:how long you have been working with your employer
ME:xxxx

VO:where would you be staying and working
ME:xxxx

VO:who is the client
ME:xxxx

VO:Annual Salary
ME:xxxxx

VO: To convince both me and yourself, Please show evidence that you will be working at client location
ME: showed the letter which confirms the same

VO: please show me your LCA
ME: YYYY

VO: What is your role and what are your responsibilities
ME:xxxx

VO:thank you for all the documents, please pick them up make sure you have everything. Did you go through the pamphlet given
ME: Thank you and yes i did go through

VO:you visa has been approved and would recieve in 4 to 5 days
ME:thank you very much, have a nice weekend.
VO: you have a good one too...

HDFC receipts are not checked, i asked VFS person there and he said that they dont check or even take out one sticker out from there and stick it on the passport anymore...however please carry them with you...

my experience is very straight forward - be confident, Stay calm, carry all the relevant documents, answer correctly and to the point...dont get into much details, they just check if you are genuine with all the documentation/purpose and how confident you are.....thats it, its your day.I was talking with someone else on my way out to get to my cab who also had similar experience.

received my passport with Visa stamped by 28th (Tuesday)

ALL THE BEST...

H1B Experience
First of all big time thanks to everyone who have shared there experiences here.

I had my H1 stamping along with my wife (H4) on August 10th at 12 .15 pm slot.
People scared me that its on a Friday (weekend) and slot is in the afternoon so chances of getting the Visa are very faint.
To my horror I had more than 15 stampings of different countries in my passport.
Though our slot was at 12.15 we left the hotel at 10 am and just opposite to the Hotel was the consulate.
I had carried a lot of documents (do not carry bags, plastic folders - not allowed inside the consulate) which was weighing more than some 3 kgs.
I was surprised to see that there was no queue in front of the consulate (May be it was a Friday). They gave us a ticket number to enter the consulate - Keep this ticket through out the process.
We entered inside around 10 20 am, inside the security screened all our documents and allowed us inside. Though I had all the documents very organised the security jumbled everything and handed to me.
It was totally messy - din't know where was my client letter, where was the other documents.
Somehow managed to keep everything in place and moved in.
They have these LCD screens where your token number is displayed.
Indian lady called me to one of the counters where she took our passports, HDFC receipt and H1 petition documents. She bundled all the documents with our passports and gave it back.
After this they told us to move to the next room My number was displayed in one of the LCD screens - Here they take your finger prints for the complete hand, thumb and fore fingers.
After this they told us to go to the next building for the interview process.
It was around 10 35 am.
We were waiting anxiously for our turn to come. Though there were many others who were waiting the LCD screen displayed my token number.
Lady in her early 20's was the VO.

Conversation with the VO

Me :: Good Morning Mam
VO :: Very Good Morning Sir

VO :: Where in the U.S are you traveling sir ?
Me :: <City, State>

VO :: Which Client would you be working for ?
Me :: <Client Name>

VO :: Very Nice, that's a top Bank in the U.S
Me :: Thanks Mam

VO :: Do you have a middle vendor between your company & the Client ?
Me :: No

After the answer she went out for something - My heart was pounding which I could sense.

VO came back after a minute

VO :: OK Sir, I am approving your Visa, Have a nice stay in the U.S
Me :: Thanks a lot mam

She did not turn to me wife even once, nor did she ask any questions to her.

We got our Passports on Tuesday morning.

Do not carry Wedding Albums, that can never be passed through the counter.
Carry a small album with important photographs.

Stay cool and answer the questions.
If the documents are in place, the interview process is easy.

All the best for everyone.
