Change name to husband's?
When I went for my interview, I passed and everything was ok. Then the officer asked me about my name, that it must be changed to my husband's name. I said, I prefer my name but if there is no choice...
Later I received the letter for my oath ceremony. I found out that it is not mandatory to change names if you do not want to.
I sent a letter requesting no to change my name, and not attending to the oath ceremony (invitation that arrived with my new last name). I went to INFOPASS, they say I'd might be called for oath ceremony on June, he did not say about my name to be changed back. Is it someone who knows about this special situations?
Thanks for your response.

Naturalization experience in Newark, NJ
Hello all.
I completed my naturalization process in Newark. The experience was very pleasent. Here are the details.

My appointment was at 8:00 AM, i reached Broad street around 7:30, there is parking lot just apposite to the federal building, very convenient. I presented my interview notice in the counter and waited for like 30 minutes, My name was called my interviewing officer was very pleasent, he asked me very few question, Mainly around my travel around the world for the last 5 years. In the civic questions he asked me very easy questions like, who is the president, vice prsident, Chief justice etc. I cleared the questions like a breeze. He congtulated me for becoming citizen and asked me to wait in the waiting area till they call my name. My wait was close to 2 hours then they called my name and signed the papers and 1 more hour for oath taking ceremony. All went well, i was out of the building by 1:00 PM, I will strongly recommend to bring some books to read in the spare time, since the waiting is long.
Good luck all.

Our experience at Newark was great. There were three steps in the process.

Citizenship Interview
Certificate Verification and Surrendering of your Green Card
Oath Ceremony

Citizenship Interview - We handed over our appointment letter at counter and it was assigned to an USCIS Officer. The office took me inside and asked me to show my passport and the green card. He asked me to show my old passport where my I-551 permanent residence visa was stamped. He asked me some simple US history questions.
How many stripes are there in the US flag?
What does the strip mean?
What do we celebrate on July 4 the?
How many house of representatives are there in the congress?
How often do we elect the house of representatives?
Who are our enemies in the second world war?
What is the constitution?
Who is the chief executive of our state?
Name one right guaranteed by the constitution and bill of rights
what holiday was celebrated for the first time by American Colonists?
Note : I hope you received the US Citizenship civic and history questions book and a CD at the time of finger print. You may find 96 questions. They will ask questions only from that questions. You may find it in the USCIS web site also.

He also asked me some standard questions like

Do you owe any money you IRS? Do you pay taxes on time?
Were you ever arrested?
Do you accept our constitution? Etc...
He asked me to write a simple sentence "Today is a cold day"

Then he told me that he is going to give me Citizenship and Congratulated me.

2. Certificate Verification and Surrendering of your Green Card

They printed the US Citizenship certificate and asked us to verify our name and sign in the original and the copy. They took our green card.

3. Oath Ceremony

We took the oath and the pledge of Allegiance .They played a video with President's message. Finally the USCIS supervisors distributed the Citizenship. They also distributed the passport application forms.

The whole process went smoothly and it took half a day for us.

I hope I have given you some insight into the US Citizenship Interview process. I hope this helps.

I wish you all the best.

Cheers !

My Naturalization timeline
July 24, 2007 Sent in N400 Application with detailed coversheet of all documents attached.

Oct 27, 2007 received Appointment Notice to get fingerprints done
Nov 24, 2007 had fingerprints done in Oakland ( I live in Fremont).
January 2008 received Appointment Notice for Interview in SF
Feb 20, 2008 was interviewed in San Francisco- DO NOT BRING A CAMERA PHONE- THEY DO NOT ACCEPT THESE INSIDE; was asked 10 History questions and had to read and write a sentence in English. She went through the Application and verified a lot of the items.
About 2 weeks later received notice for Oath ceremony.
March 25, 2008 attended the Oath cermeony in SF and became a citizen! Camera's are allowed here and it is quite impressive. There were 1500 people from 99 countries.
Good luck to everyone!

Case status...
I filed N400 in Dec 2007,
Application received date : December 18, 2007
Fingerprinting: Feb 8 2008,
NOA mentioned I should hear about the date and place of interview within next 90 days. It is about 90 days and I havent heard anything yet. I called in today and Customer Service mentioned that processing time on an average is about 12 months. I was wondering if so, why have they sent me the NOA stating i should hear something within 90 days? Any one in similar situation?

Stuck in Security Clearance since Oct. 2006
I applied for my N400 along with my husband's in Oct.2006. Then we got our fingerprinting done in Oct.2006 itself. After that, my husband got his interview call and oath ceremony as well by April 2007. However, I did not hear back from them at all. Everytime I call, I get notified that my case is still in security clearance. The most recent call, my attorney made was sometime last week (as of March 24, 2008). She told me that after 3 enquiry calls to USCIS, they have to forward the call to the district office where individual cases are held. The District office told my attorney that my case is awaiting security clearance. And the security clearance can take upto 4 years from the date of fingerprinting!!!
Thankyou,

N400 - US Citizenship and the delay
I have applied for citizenship last year at CA Service center and the receipt data is Jun' 7th 2007. The finger printing was done in a month. Since then I have been waiting for an interview letter. Some of who have applied in August, Sep of 2007 have already been interviewed or even taken the oath too. By calling the customer service, I do not get to hear anything more about my application status other than what I see online.

Is there any other help number we call to get a better status? Does writing letter would help? I do not see the processing time for N400 for CA service center. Please help.

Thanks!
