Mom got visa.
My mother got her visa from the Kolkata Consulate on 23rd Sept. Earlier she had been granted a one year visa in 2006 and had visited her younger daughter for 6 months. This time questions asked were:

Mom: (Says good morning in English and does a namaskar with folded hands as well.)
VO:(Smiling) Good morning.
1. Why do you want to go?
I want to visit my younger daughter and son-in-law and also travel.
2.Have you been to the US before?
Yes.
3.When?
(I had made my Mom memorise the exact dates...xxMay to xx Nov)
4.How many children do you have?
Two daughters.
5.Where does your other daughter stay?
xxx place,India.
6. Is she married?
Yes,xx years.
7. I see that your husband is no more.(Checking the form). When did he expire?
In 2003.
Okay, you passport with visa will be couriered to your home address.
Mom: (Smiling)Thank you very much.
VO: (Smiling)Thank You.

She got a 10 yr multiple entry visa.

Some salient points:
a)The first time she went, she had applied for 4 months but since she was given 6 months at the POE, she stayed for 6 months and returned two days before the time expired.
No questions on why she had asked for 4 months in her forms and stayed for 6.

b)None of the questions asked in her earlier interview were repeated! The first time she was asked if her daughter was pregnant, her answer was no...this time no question on that.

c)There was certain parts in the form that I was unable to fill up online like checking certain boxes etc but it did not matter.

d)We had opted for a Bengali translater while filling up her form, but when my mother's time came, there was no one around and the VO started asking questions in English. My mother gestured that she did not understand what he was saying and smiled. The VO smiled back, got up and fetched a gentleman sitting at the table near him. The gentleman told my mother in Bengali that he would be her translater.

e)The people at the consulate ( I can say this about the Kolkata Consulate) are kind and seem to understand that most elderly people especially unaccompanied ladies find the whole procedure of giving an interview unnerving .They are quite helpful. Only thing is that the applicant is only allowed in.

d) My mother told me that 5 out of the 10 people before her had to come out becoz their photographs were not in order. Its best if you arrive early and get the photo clicked from the 2-3 studios right next to the consulate if you live far away. It takes 5-10 minutes and then you can just stick it on the form. US visa photograph specifications are very different from those of other countries and few studios in Kolkata do it correctly.

Thank you Immihelp.

Parents got visitors visa
My parents got 10 year multiple entry visitor visas. Thanks to Immihelp for all the information that helped in preparing for the interview. The interview was in English in Chennai consulate on 23rd September at 11:30 a.m. They went to the consulate at 10:30 a.m. They had to wait outside in the line for about half an hour. Once inside, the verification, fingerprinting, interview and all other procedures were over by 12:45 p.m. In the interview few questions were asked but none of the supporting documents were seen.

The questions asked were:
To my dad:
1. Why do you want to go to U.S.?
To visit our daughter and son-in-law and to see the places around in U.S.

2. How many children do you have?
Two. One son and one daughter.

3. What does your son do?
Works as YYYY in YYYY company in YYYY country. (My brother works in Europe)

4. What does your daughter do?
Homemaker

5. Where does your son-in-law work?
YYYY (company name)

6. What do you do?
Retired

7. Do you have any property in India?
Yes (But the VO did not see any property documents)

To my mom:
1. What do you do?
Homemaker

Our scenario: We are permanent residents.

There was an error while typing my father’s date of birth in my mother’s DS-156 form. I had asked them to bring this to the notice of the person verifying forms in the consulate. But probably they forgot. But there was no problem arising out of that.

Hope this information is useful for future applicants and once again thanks to Immihelp.
