US Tourist Visa (B2) at Chennai Consulate for In-Laws & Parents+Sister
In June/July 2008 my in-laws from Hyderabad went to the Chennai Consulate and got their 10 year multiple entry tourist visa with ease. No documents were looked at, and only a few basic questions such as where/what son-in-law works for were asked. In-laws asked for passport pick-up and they picked it up next day from the VFS office.
In Oct 2008 my parents and sister went together to the Chennai Consulate (skip VFS lounge and save Rs.200/person) for tourist visa (B2). They arrived more than an hour before their appointment time and were let inside the consulate. Passport and Appt. letter checked at counter outside, Security check with all enveloped opened and documents checked, Documents checked and photo of photo taken at counter inside, then sit in line in chairs, then go to visa officer window when turn comes. Again, the visa officer asked basic questions such as: "Are you going to visit your son?", "Where does he work?", "Other than son and daughter here do you have any other son/daughter in US?", "to sister: What do you work as?", "Does he have green card or H1B?". Either my father or sister replied to his questions. Mother was not asked anything directly. And then he said that they will get their passport with visa next week (they went on Fri, Monday was holiday). Again, he didn't look at any of the documents. They were out of consulate even before their scheduled appointment time.
Documents carried:
Mandatory docs per person:
Passport, DS-156 with photo, DS-157 for sister only, Appointment letter, HDFC bank receipt with 2 barcode stickers
Sponsor docs (not looked at):
I-134 (notarized), 6 month bank statements, Bank letter of deposits, Employment letter, I-797A (H1B) copy, Passport complete copy, 3 Pay Stub copies, Original Birth certificate with affidavit of missing name, Invitation Letter, Letter to Consulate.
Father: Income tax statements, Proof of Pension, House ownership papers, Bank statements/letter of deposits.

1. first they were asked to show the appointment letter in the entrance, which will be seperate lane for ladies and gents.

3.verification counter: they showed D156 and passport, then their finger prints were taken
