Mom got visitors visa at Chennai Consulate
HI,
My mom received her passport on saturday with 10 year stamping. Since I requested a translator she had to wait a long time. Her interview time was 11.30 a.m, but she was interviewed only at 4.30 p.m. Questions asked were:
1. What purpose are you going to US?
2. Who are there?
3. What is ur annual income?
4. Why are u going alone?
The officer saw only the documents sent by us. HE did not see any of my moms docs like property papers, bank statement etc...

Personal Appearance at the Consulate
My parents are planning on visiting USA in Jan 2003. I was going through the various visitor's visa experiences people have faced in the recent past. I must say its very useful for a person like me who is doing this process for my parents for the first time. I have one question though. Since the rule for drop boxes have changed since July 2003. Does this mean that even though my dad is over 60 and my mom is 53, both of them have to go to the consulate or can they use the drop box?

REsponses will be greatly appreciated.

Important requirement
My m-i-l & f-i-l just got their visas in chennai consulate for 10 yrs through consulate appointment. God knows what the immigration officer in newark will write on the I-94 as to the expiration of visit. Point to note: you have to fill-in the DS-156 back-to-back on the same sheet of paper. I forgot and had to ask f-i-l to fill-in again in chennai at the last hour. Also dont rely on words from friends saying no appointments for next 3 months(or something like that). Visit the tts website every few days to check for availability of appointments. I fixed appointment for Saturday 09/13/03 on Monday 09/08/2003, they got got their visa-stamped passports back by courier on 09/15/03 to south tamilnadu.
good luck to all other visa aspirants.

3 month Visa
Looks like there is a pattern of issuing visa for 3 months! Heard many other cases recently. In this case, my mom went to the embassy alone.

Questions were simple such as:
1. When do you plan on leaving to the US?
2. What is your husband's income?
3. How many kids do you have in total?

I know that the visa expiration date does not neccessarily mean anything but the date on I-94 does. Now, she is planning on travelling just before the visa date expires. Is there a chance that the immigration officer may issue I-94 for 10-15 days.

So, what are the options of getting visa at the port of entry for 6 months? That way, I can avoid filing for an extension after coming here, which again involves documentation etc.,

I saw some info on this website requesting (letter) to the officer at the port of entry to give the visa for 6 months.

Now, my question is, did anyone else try such a thing (sending a request letter to your parents to present it at the port of entry)? How did it go? Was it smooth or were there any bad reactions? She can talk in English but first time interaction with this accent may be a problem.

Any ideas, suggestions will be very helpful. Please post any other experiences regarding this.

Thanks,
Kathi Kamaluddin!

My parents got Visa from Delhi
Hi all ,
With the Gods grace my parents got Visitor visa on 09/10/2003. We dont know yet how long the visa is cause they are going to send the papers by mail.
In-Laws got 6 months Visa At Chennai in first attempt

The interview was on september 10th 2003.
We took appointment for interview in local leng.
We sent all the papers listed in this site and also sent them all the interview questions with answers to them. At the consulate, They first checked all the papers sent by us. Then they went for the interview. The following were the questions:
Why my parents are going to US?
What's my Father doing in India?
What's his salary?
Who is in India?
How many kids? Where are they now?
From how long is your son staying in US?
To which place are u going in US?
On what visa your son go to US?

It seems the lady who interviewed them rejected 5 visas ahead of them. So, they were a little worried how the interview will go. But it went well by God's Grace. and also the day before interview we called them and asked them all the possible questions over the phone.
I would say the main thing we told them was, Answer to the question precisely, briefly and Don't give too much Unnecessary information.
and make your point in 1 or 2 sentences.
Also, my parents asked visa for only 3 months in the Form NOT 6 months.
Thanks to this site which helped us prepare the documents. I am posting this here so that it will be helpful to others.
