My wife was in US already on H1-B. I have been there after finishing my PhD on H4 for a couple of months. I got a postdoc position at Yale then came back to India to apply for J1. Interview date May 1 and J1 issued on May 4. But then they took my passport back for additional processing - submitted at dropbox on May 7 and got acknowledged on May 10. CEAC status update on May 4. Inquired multiple times with standard responses. Still waiting...

I was asked questions regarding my visit to the USA which is for a research internship from the month of June-August 2018. After I answered all his questions, the VO handed me the green 221g slip and said thank you. My internship start date is approaching on 18th June 2018 and I still haven't received any word on the status of my visa application. The green slip mentioned about my visa application being refused and forwarded for further processing.
Update 15/06/2018: Passport and copy of I-20 form along with Email confirmation of Visa approval dropped off at VFS Center.
Update 19/06/2018: Marked as "Issued" on CEAC Website

The interviewer asked basic questions, then took the passport and said your visa needs to go for additional administrative processing. The CEAC tracker showed the last case updated date as the interview date till 45 days.
On June 18, it suddenly updated the last case updated date but still was showing administrative processing.
On June 19, it suddenly showed 'issued' in the CEAC tracker.

In US since 12 yrs, trusting drop-box was BIG mistake!
Feb 6: Submitted passport, I-797 at Mumbai drop box, client letter etc. not accepted
Feb 10: Got email that passport ready for pickup at Pune, wow drop-box is so fast?
Feb 13: Collected passport AND 221G slip asking to come for interview any working day at 10:30
Feb 14: Appeared for Interview with all docs, VO gave yellow 221G slip and asked to email client letter and contract copy to [email protected]
Feb 23: Company sent PDF docs, less than 5 MB, got ack, status AP, last update date says Feb 14th
May 31: On 97th day, client manager got call from State Dept for verification
Jun 1: Client responded
Jun 14: Received email to submit passport
Jun 19 Collected passport
This is so ridiculous! We all work so hard, pay taxes, invest and help US economy grow and this is the treatment we get in return?clueless wait? while your family suffers? I came for a 2.5 week trip for a family emergency leaving my 1 month old baby behind, now stuck

I attended an interview for the J-1 research scholar visa at the Chennai consulate. The interview went well and the interviewer was very pleasant. At the end, she asked me to hand over my CV, DS-2019 and passport and gave me the blue slip. The only box checked was for administrative processing. I was not asked for any further information or documents. I asked her how long this would take, but she said that the time varies so she couldn't give me an estimate.

On Jun 13th my status date was updated with no change in the actual status.
On June 14th my status briefly changed to "application received" before switching back to "administrative processing."
On 18th the status changed to issued.

UPDATE:
I received my H1B at the end of FEB 2018, 6 weeks after submitting my documents. Visa is only valid for two years. Usually, H1B's stamped are valid for 3 years. B
The documents that were handed to me during the interview said that processing documents would take AT LEAST 8 weeks. But the interviewee at the counter mentioned to me casually that it generally takes about 4 weeks to process.
