10/12 Got married to the love of my life in Minneapolis, MN
10/18 (DAY 1) Submitted 155 page AOS application to USCIS for processing (included I-131, I-765, I-485, I-130, three notarized affidavits, a doctors letter, pictures, text threads, notes, receipts from our wedding rings, $1,500, tax returns, birth certificates, marriage certificates, passport copies)
11/4 (DAY 10) Received receipt notice for 1-130, but not the other 3 (all 4 were sent to our lawyer, however)
11/18 (DAY 30) Notice for Biometrics appointment received.
11/28 (DAY 40) Received notification: The Post Office returned a notice we sent you for your Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization , because they could not deliver it. MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR NEW SPOUSE’S NAME ON YOUR MAILBOX
11/28 (DAY 40) Status set to ‘Document Was Mailed To Me’. Thinking this was the EAD we very prematurely celebrated. Status was updated to:
On November 28, 2016, we mailed your document for Receipt Number MSC YYYY ZZZ, directly to the address you gave us. If you do not receive your document by December 28, 2016, please go to
www.uscis.gov/e-request to request the document be sent to you. If you move, go to
www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.
11/29 (DAY 41) Biometrics Appointment completed
Waiting.
12/21 (Day 65) Husband gets job offer at great corporation with a tentative start date of January 9th, 2017.
12/22 (DAY 66) Husband accepts offer and writes letter to HR explaining situation. HR is very understanding. We even attached a formal letter written from our lawyer explaining the process.
12/28 (DAY 71) Nothing has arrived in the mail. Call USCIS and inform them. Tier one customer service says it’s the EAD card that has been mailed. Tier 2 says it hasn’t been approved yet.
More waiting.
1/3 (DAY 78) We ask our lawyer to submit a request for expedite (you can technically request this after 75 days) – no response.
1/5 (DAY 80) Husband asks company for an extension of the start date to 1/16 or later. Company obliges, thankfully.
1/9 (DAY 85) We call USCIS (Tier 2) and put in a formal request for expedite
1/10 (DAY 86) USCIS emails requesting a fax of the formal job letter. Confused, at this point, why we even had to request an expedite in the first place since this is supposed to process in 90 days. Frustrated.
1/10 (DAY 86) We faxed in the job offer one hour later.
1/13 (DAY 88) Received another email from USCIS claiming that our request for expedite was received and they would be making a decision regarding our case “shortly”.
Ugh.
1/17 (Day 90) Spoke to HR person at my husbands company and they informed us that they can wait until February. The anxiety is real.
1/17 (Day 90) Reached out to congressman’s office and had an inquiry sent on our behalf.
1/18 (Day 91) Started following @USCIS on Instagram. Sent them a light-hearted direct message on Instagram saying: Dear @uscis , for Christmas I asked for an EAD for my husband so that he could respond to his pending job offer. We kept our tree up hoping that Santa would deliver it in time. Now we’re on day 95 and still no word. I even checked the stockings. Since (husband) isn’t authorized to travel outside of the USA to the North Pole, we figured this would be the best way to reach you. Sincerely, (me) & (husband). Case # YYYY YYYY ZZZ
1/19 (Day 92) Got a notification saying the EAD is being produced! Want to celebrate…but need to be patient. Could still be a week or two. Did Instagram work??
1/26 (Day 99) EAD in HANDS. Rushed to the Social Security office where all they needed was a passport and EAD. Gave a receipt which did NOT have the SSN on it and there is no way of finding out your number while it is processing – you just need to…..you guessed it, WAIT.
2/1 (Day 105) Went to the Social Security office to request verbally for them to tell us the number. They obliged.
2/13 (Day 117) Husband starts job.
This has been a long journey that has made us stronger, more patient, and I hope that we never have to go through it again.
Good luck everyone,
ChileMinnesota
