4. How long have you been working for them?
5. What is your role?
6. What are your roles & responsibilities?
7. Explain about your project
8. What is your salary?
9. Which client are you working for?
10. Do you have a client letter?
Then the VO said he needs to verify something and his colleague would call me in few mins, please be seated. After 30-45 mins my number appeared at the same counter, the officer told your VISA is approved and you will receive an email in 2 days.

H1B Visa Interview (Mumbai - 21st Nov, 2012) - The success story!
For All Visa Aspirants -
Here's my experience with VISA interview:

My VO was from some other world. I greeted him only to receive no response. A few seconds he played with his computer and gestured me to pass on my passport. I gave him the passport and original petition document. (All this time i was looking straight into his eyes..but he was as dead as dodo). He again played with the computer and the expression suggested my documentation was as per expectation. Then he starter asking questions:

1. xxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxx state ? (I could not hear 90% of the question.. that speaker never worked)
Ans : xxxxxx ( a state in USA :)

2. (VO making faces) Whats your income in states ?
Ans : Ohh my income you say ... Its $xxxxxxx/- (Was super-confident in answering. He too was surprised at my confidence)

3. Whats your designation ? (This was a ambiguous question. Designation where? Current company or Employer in US)
Ans : My Designation in current company is xxxxxx (Key here was pick any company since VO did not specify which one)

4. First Time in States ?
Ans: Yeah! (This one was easy)

Now he decides to pick up my Passport and bang it in a tray next to him and throw my Petition Copy back from the slit and starts playing with his computer again. By now I realized that since he kept my Passport, I probably have the VISA approved. As he was so weird from the begining, i did not greet him good bye but started walking. That's when he speaks in the mic (loud and clearly this time.... only to realize that the mic indeed works but was purposefully not used correctly.. just to test my patients and nerves) to call me back. I apologized and, only to my surprise saw a smile on his face.
He said, and I quote "Your VISA application has been approved! You will get your passport stamped within 4 days. Have a Great Day!" I thanked him and wished him a great day ahead!

The key to success here was :
1. Have confidence in yourself and the documentation you carry
2. Don't disclose how much that approval means to you. Be yourself and don't loose your dignity.
3. Study you documentation thoroughly and give precise/short answers

All the Best!

H1B Approved: Mumbai Consulate: 20 Nov: Got Passport 23Nov
I got my Visa approved on 21st Nov 2012. Collected the stamped visa on 23rd NOV from Mumbai Collection Center in BKC. Traveled to US on Saturday Morning!

Due to Death of Balasaheb Thakrey Mumbai consulate remained closed on Monday the 19th Nov. I had my OFC finger printing that time. The US consulate combined 20th Nov appointment and OFC ( just finger printing ) together.

I reached BKC at 7 pm for 9 pm appointment. There was huge Queue. I stood in the queue for almost 1 hr till I reached inside.
They do NOT allow BAGPACKS! Remember. Carry only the documents – NO CD/floppy etc… No one checked the appointment time. For 9 am appointment you can go early too.
There was a guy who came in late for the appointment but he was allowed in after some scolding :P

Security is less intimidating than it was in the older consulate. They did not tell us to remove boots/belts etc. That is a good process.

After security they made 2 separate queues for H1 and B1 (we have seats to sit there ) There are rest rooms and water fountains – They also have food counter to quench ur thirst/hunger.

Then they make you go in and stand in one more queue for Token number. Once you get a token number they make you seat in chairs and you have to watch the TV screens for your token no. ( for me I had to get my finger prints before I went for interview as OFC of previous day was cancelled. This was special case)

My number came in 10 mins. There were 2 ladies with kids before me for H4. They were asked few questions – show marriage album/ photos/ where did they meet/husbands Salary etc.

My number came soon after that:
The interviewer was American:
VO: so you are applying for H1?
ME: Yes.
VO: which company?
ME: XYZ.
VO: so you have done masters….?
ME: YES in..ZZZ.
VO: What is your title and what do you do?
ME: Told them what was in LCA
VO: I approve your visa
ME: One question: I have to travel to US on Saturday. Can I get my visa soon.
VO: Contact VFS at the exit gate.
ME: Thanks.

He did not ask me any documents/Pay slips any thing….

TIPS:
1. Do not carry bagpacks – not allowed: Carry a harmonium type folder
2. You can go to the interview before your time ( e.g at 7am for 9 am appointment)
3. There is no need for HDFC fee receipt like old times –you will get a single printout if you pay online
4. There is no need for Advanced submission of documents- 3 days – as was previously
5. To get your passport as soon as possible- choose the collection center as close to the consulate as possible – I chose Mumbai BKC – My
Visa interview – 20th – 22nov was holiday –thanks giving – I got my passport on 23 nov –This was really neck to neck as I had booked my return tickets on Saturday.
6. There is no need to carry photographs – but it is better to carry . My DS160 submitted photo had pink background so they called me to submit another photograph. Luckily I had one more

Passport Tracking system: where you mail the email ID given in USTraveldocs site is pretty useless gives weird messages which mean nothing.
The VFS has no information until they receive the passport.

Best of luck to all

My H1B interview experience
My appoint was on 8th and 9th of November in Chennai. OFC, on 8th, went smoothly without any issues.

On 9th the, the appointment was at 10:30 am. I reached the consulate at 9:30 and I was let inside by 9:45. First there was security check after which they gave a
token number. I waited till the token number appeared on the screen. I went to the counter number displayed on the screen against my token number. The person at the
counter asked for my passport, original I-797, appointment letter and D160 confirmation sheet. She put them all together ,put a rubber band and gave the bunch back to me. Then I went to another building
where the interviews happen.

In that building there were two sections of counters. In the first section they collect DDs if any amount needs to paid (I am not aware fully though) and in the other section, visa officers were sitting and taking the interviews. I waited there till my token number appeared on the screen. Though all the fees was paid by employer, the
counter number displayed against my token number was the counter where they collect the DDs. I said the same thing to the VFS executive present there. He asked whether there was any fee to be
paid. I said, "no". Then he asked all the visa applicants sitting there to check whether any of them have got the same token number as mine because there was a
problem in token system that day. Nobody was there with same token number and then he told to check with the person sitting in the counter. When I went to the counter, the
person there asked me DD from HDFC. Before going to the consulate I had seen all the documents and there was no DD in the documents given by my employer. I said, "I
don't have it with me" then he asked how the payment was made. I was not aware how the payment was made. He asked me for my appointment letter and checked something in his
system and said to go. I was scared that something has gone wrong. I asked him that was there a problem with fee payment and he replied "no problem". So, before you
go to the interview, have knowledge of how the payment is made(Later I came to know that, earlier the payment was made through HDFC but, now it is made online. My
payment was also done online..:))

I went back to the waiting area and waited till my token number appeared.
VO: (smiling) Good morning
me: good morning sir. How are you?
vo: I am doing good. Thank you. How are you doing?
me: good.
vo: So, you work for YYYY .
me: yes sir, I work for xxxx.
vo: who is you client?
me: "Some_Company"
vo: okay.. and what will be your salary there?
me: yyyyy dollars per annum.
vo: okay.. your visa is approved. you'll get your passport in 3-4 days.
me: thank you sir Have a good day

I was relaxed after vo said that he had approved the visa. In my appointment letter, my passport pick address was VFS Bangalore office. If you want to get the passport
to any other address other than the one mentioned in appointment letter, you should fill a form and pay 300 rupees in the same building. I forgot to fill that form, I
remembered it when I came out of the consulate. I used track the passport by sending mail to [email protected] mentioning the passport number in the subject line. Since there was some issue in the systems, I was not getting the proper reply. So, I used to call the help desk(+912267209400) and get the status. Passport reached Bangalore on 16th of Nov(Fri) and I went on 19th (Mon) to collect it. The office is near to the Shivaji Nagar bus stand and opposite of Empire hotel.

Thanks,
Mahantesh
