Got H1 after 221g last year
Hi folks,

Thank you all for sharing your valuabale experiences and suggestions.

I would like to share my experince as well.
Last year I had got my H1 petition approved but could not get it stamped as Chennai consulate had sent me back with with 221g asking for additional documents (Project itenarary, end client contact info, photo graphs of client office, etc.). I waited for a couple of months for those papers from my petitioner but i did not receive them. So i decided to give it up and look for another opportunity. And this year another company filed my H1. And on 19th Sep, I successfully got it stamped in Mumbai consulate. I think chennai office scrutinizes the applications more critically (this cud be because of some fraduelent cases from that zone in the past). In mumbai consulate my interview went like this:
1) I had an appointment at 10:00. I standed in the queue @ 9:30 and finally I got to enter in the consulate @ 10:45.
2) After clearing the initial security check, I went to one counter where they retrieve our packet sent to them in advance (ds-156, 157, additional questionnaire, etc). Here u need to handover ur original I-797 and draft of Rs.2400.
3) All the documents mentioned in point no.2. are kept in one envelop and u r given a set of 3 token and u r aked to proceed for finger print scnanning.
4) Hand over the envelop to the finger print counter and get the finger print scanning done. They will return u ur HDFC receipt and a token out of the set of 3 tokens here. And they will ask u to wait for announcement of ur token number.
5) My token number was announed in 15 min.
6) I went to the designated window and greeted the consular officer. He was mid-aged nice guy.
7) I haned over my token to him. He then retrieved my envelop and looked into the system.
8) And to my surprise, he told me that u already have H1 (for last year), even though I had not mentioned it anywhere.
9) Then I explained to him why I cud not get my last year's H1 stamped.
10) He then looked for a stamp on the last page of my passport and asked for last year's 221g letter from chennai consulate. I gave it to him.
11) He then retreived my case from the chennai consulate and read it. He told me that I am accessing your case from chennai. I confidently responded "Ok".
12) He asked me to show my degree certificate. I showed it.
13) Then asked me for how long I worked for my previous company and for how long I am working for the current company (I answered and I notified to him that currently I am working for the subsidiary company of the US company I am going to work for, it made a lot of difference).
14) He then asked me for appointment letter from the current company.
15) After that he made some notes on the system and said ok "You got the visa, you will receive your passport by courier in 3 days".
16) I thanked him and asked can I collect the passport personally as I have to fly to Japan tomorrow. He said yes today between 5-6 at visa application center.
17) I then collected my passport on the same day.

I would like to give you a few tips which worked for me:
1) Be cool and confident (deep breathing will help you out). Try not to be nervous. Speak politely and concisely. Speak only about what you are asked for.
2) Carry all the orginal documents that you can imagine. It's upto your luck what documents you will be asked for. I realized that if they ask for any document and you have it, they will give you visa even without critically looking at those documents. But if you do not have a document they ask for, there is a huge possibility that you will not get the visa. It happened to my friend's wife who was also with me on that day. They asked for a proof that her husband is working in us (US appointment letter, salary slip, passport stamp, etc). She did not have it and she was refused the visa and called back with that document.
3) Do not carry any electronic items, water bottles, bags, food items, etc to the consulate. They allow only one plastic carry bag for the documents and nothing else.
4)Prepare your answers to the questions that you expect for your case, well in advance. This will make you at ease while answering at consulate.
