L1 Visa for new client/project - Help required
Hi Friends,

I have a total experience of 4.8 years. I have previously worked at client side (Canada) for 1.8 years.

I have recently joined a new company (only a month before), for a new client/project, for my current employer. As the client/project is completely new to the company, we don't have any existing experience with the client/project.

I am required to apply for L1 Visa to handle the project related activities from US. As per my understanding w.r.t. interview questions, it's very important to have some knowledge with the client & company from offshore.

Question 1: Could you please let me know, what all things I should be taking care w.r.t the interview? Considering the fact that I am new to company & its a new project.

Question 2: My spouse would be accompanyng me to US on L2 Visa. Is it fine, if we both apply for VISA together?

Hi ,

My L1B approved on May 20 and VO is cool and asked questions which are well expected.

My observations

Highlight your number of years of experience in all your answers to the VO, the more years , you have more chances

Mention your designation wherever possible , senior designation have more chances

L1 B Blanket Visa - Approved and Easy Steps to gett
I went for my Visa interview on May 19th in Chennai. An unusual day in Chennai, it was raining heavily (rather to say pouring heavily). I had my interview scheduled at 9 AM and I went at 8.45 am. The security told to join the queue irrespective of the time of my appointment; there were more than 100 people before me in the queue. I was wearing my rain jacket and having an umbrella, I brought a back=pack to protect my documents and letters. However when I came near the security counter, I was told to leave my bag in a nearby place where the person collected the bag and gave me a token (a fee of Rs. 10 was collected). I have to carry my documents in the hand and my documents all got wet in the rain, I tried to hide as much as possible but in vain. My advice would be don’t carry bags, just plastic bags and purse will do. Cover all the documents well in plastic covers.

Inside, the security checked my wet documents and my pockets just to find my purse and ID card (all wet and damp).

I went to the counter were took my 10 finger print and he re-arranged my folder again and told me to carry only those documents in that order and the other documents to be placed separately. I was given a DD (only for Blanket applications), I was told to write my name, PP# and interview date.

Later I went to the other block where the actual interview took place, I went to the counter to pay the DD. Later, I was told to join the queue for the Interview.

I got nervous, just to give my background, I got my L1B Blanket denied three years back and was told to apply for H1B or L1B New and told to apply through drop-box (and need not come for an interview). I got my L1B New stamped that way and also traveled to US for the same client am currently working and returned back a year back. My L1B New visa got expired and I was applied a L1B Blanket and was wondering if they might even consider my case.

Me: Good Morning
VO: Good Morning. Can I have your documents?
<I gave my documents and passport; she gave me back the counter copy of my DD payment bill>

VO: How long have you been working for your company?
Me: I have been working for ABC for the last 4 years and 3 months

VO: Can you tell me about your project?
Me: I work for JKL client which is the Credit Card division of XYZ bank (one of the Big-4 banks in US). I have my technical expertise in Mainframe Technologies in COBOL, CICS, VSAM & JCL. I’m working on the Card Decision Engine project for the last 4 years for the client.

VO: What is the work in US?
Me: Well there is an enhanced Decision Engine to be developed by Client wherein, the Canadian Engine will be merged with the US Engine to have a single exhaustive Decision Engine, I will be working for the developmental activities for the new project which includes, creating the High Level Design & Architecture, Coding for three major functional modules, testing and deployment.
<by that time she started typing something in the system and stopped for a while and turned and asked me..>

VO: Were you denied the same Visa?
Me: Yes in May 2007, my L1B Blanket visa got rejected and I was told to apply for L1B New which I did and traveled to US.
<she confusingly asked…>
VO: Your L1 B visa got rejected?
Me: NO. I applied for L1B Blanket in May 2007 and the visa got refused for lack of specialized skills and was told to apply for L1B New, which I did the next month and my L1B New (stressed on it) got stamped and I did travel to US for the same client.
<She immediately check my passport for the stamping and said OK.>
<She started to sign my I129S petitions and suddenly stopped and asked me…>
VO: How long are you in India? (guess she meant after returning from US)
Me: Last 17 months!!?
<She continued to stamp and sign on my petitions and passport>
VO: Your visa is approved and your passport will reach in 3-5 business days.
(GOLDEN WORDS)
Me: Thank you
VO: Welcome and please take back these.
<She gave 2 copies of my signed I129S and my mark-sheet photocopies>

Though the interview took less than 5 mins, the whole process was quite tense for me and something that really bailed me out was my preparations.

Prepare for four these questions, then absolutely no issues… others would be the questions that you will have the answers.

The questions are.
1) What is the project you are working?
2) What is the work in US?
3) What is the experience with the clients?
4) Overall Experience and the experience with your current employer?

For the first question, say works like, production support, minor enhancements, application maintenance, defect fixing, monitoring & reporting. Though the tasks might be development please say it as maintenance… which helps.

For the second question, you need to say development works like .. (and tell the developmental activities in plain terms…) preparing high level design, Architecture, coding for how many modules, testing and deployment… terms like Re-Engineering, Risk Analysis, Mitigation, Gap Analysis.. applies when the project is for some major enhancements

Third question, experience with Clients should be around 18 months.. Advisable to say above 18 months, if you have worked with them.

Overall Experience is the same as your total technical experience.

Prepare well, practice many times the previous day in front of the mirror (it helped me). The above questions, you should be prepared which will help.

Thank you, All the Best.
