My boyfriend and I were planning a trip to the US in August this year. We were saving and planning our itinerary for the trip. The last thing we thought would be a problem is our VISAs. I mean, we are both working individuals and have sufficient funds for our trip.
I think what made it quite tough was not being able to book anything before being approved our VISA. Yet, they still expect you to know exactly where you will be staying, etc.
Anyway, on the day, we had all our documents ready and did not think our interview would be a problem (I mean, I heard they were tough, but didn't expect it to be this bad)
The interview went like this:
Q: What is your relation to one another?
A: We are dating
(Boyfriend first)
Q: Why are you visiting the US?
A: For tourism
Q: What do you do?
A: Logistics Manager for a catering company, Doorstep Chef
Q: How long have you worked there?
7 years
Q: Where was your last trip overseas?
A: I went to Rome, Italy, last year in August
Q: Where will you be staying in the US?
A: New York, Lower East Side (we hadn't booked anything yet, so we were unsure on how to answer, but we were looking at accommodation on the Lower East Side)
(My turn!)
Q: What do you do?
A: Graphic Designer for e-commerce company, Takealot
Q: How long have you worked there?
A: Beginning of this year
Q: What did you do before that?
I did a 2 year internship in media
Q: Where was your last trip overseas?
A: This would be my first
(To both of us)
Q: So, do you know someone in New York?
A: Yes, we have a friend there, who we met last year when he visited South Africa for the first time
He then said, "You have both been denied a VISA to the US, our immigration laws are very strict, and you do not comply. You may re-apply when your situation changes."
Then we both said, "but why, what is the reason?"
He said "I am unable to specify at this time"
We were both dumbstruck! He did not ask for one piece of supporting documentation. And the fact that he didn't have a straight answer for us made it very frustrating. We thought employment full time would suffice for a good enough tie here. Seems impossible for a young, unmarried couple to travel!
We are still unsure about why we got denied. Should we have lied and said we knew no one? Should we have explained our accommodation situation better? How do we know when our "situation" changes? What is our "situation"? Did it matter that I haven't travelled overseas before? Our maybe that I just started working at a new job (wouldn't that show that it would be silly for me to immigrate now just after getting a new job)? Is it a problem that we are unmarried, without kids and things to come back to?
We are very disappointed but we decided to go to Singapore instead, for us in South Africa we do not need a VISA for 90 days. We didn't want our trip to be spoiled, and we are making the best out of an ugly situation. However, we have always dreamed of going to New York and hoping to reapply next year. Any tips going forward?
